Cahorra Bassa Mozambique

Cahorra Bassa at 270 km long is roughly the same size as Kariba. Cahora Bassa remains virtually unfished, having been protected first by a civil war and now by its remoteness.

From the wall the first 30 km of Cahora Bassa lies within a deep gorge before opening out into the main lake. For reasons of distance and also because the high surrounding mountains offer protection from strong winds, most fishing is done within this gorge and the various shallower bays running off it
The Cahorra Bassa Dam project started as a joint project between the Portuguese and South African Governments in the late 1960’s. Surveys had correctly shown that the physical features of the Cahorra Bassa Gorge were theoretically ideal for a hydro-electrical scheme, but the practical aspects were somewhat different due to endless Political wrangling.
Contractors erected the biggest hydro electrical scheme in the Southern Africa region at an inaccessible site, and on a river best known for its violent and unpredictable floods. The tropical climate produced sweltering heat one moment and torrential rain the next.

However, Cahorra Bassa has been growing in popularity over the past few years as a fishing spot. For the past 25 years it has been largely unfished and there are a large variety of species to be found - tiger, chessa, beam, cornishjack, vundu to name a few.

Cahora bassa dam is an astonishing achievement done by man and has also served good for the local communities downstream as the dam wall has now prevented potential river flooding & swamping.

You can also find fantastic accommodation along the edges of this beautiful dam with plenty of activities to enjoy, such as, kayaking, exploring the dam by boat, flyfishing (haven for catching Tiger Fish).
