Welcome to Brickfield Hill at the heart of Sydney's vibrant and fashionable Surry Hills When you stay with us, we offer you the use of facilities, free high-speed WiFi and where possible, access to your room from early morning. Brickfield Hill is a small elegant guesthouse in the center of Sydney. We offer personal service and excellent local knowlege, not to mention an amazing location in Surry Hills, Sydney's design and fashion center brimming with cafes and restaurants. |
Brickfield Hill is one of six four-storey terraces built by a Victorian speculator on the Surry Hills escarpment in Riley Street in the 1880's. The terraces were built to take advantage of views of the Blue Mountains and glimpses of the mountains can still be enjoyed from the fourth floor of Brickfield Hill. The first owner of 403 Riley Street was Mrs Lydia King, who operated a boarding house. During meticulous restoration in the 1990's traces of that bygone era were discovered: the wiring for servant bells, discarded Victorian clothing in roof storage, or an empty beer bottle imported from Liverpool in England in the late 1800's. The name 'Brickfield Hill' now given to 403 Riley Street, was chosen with a view to keeping alive a local 19th century name that has since disappeared from Sydney. Brickfield Hill was a precinct in the vicinity of Surry Hills where bricks were made for the rapidly expanding town in the earliest days of the Colony of New South Wales. With a depression in the 1890's much of inner Sydney, particularly Surry Hills, fell on hard times and indeed Surry Hills is one of the last precincts to experience a revival. Now an eclectic mix of post-war immigrants, students, city workers and families, it has become one of Sydney's most alluring districts. Nearby Oxford Street was identified with gay and lesbian culture even before the first annual Mardi Gras Parade and is about to undergo urban renewal. |
The four guest rooms of Brickfield Hill are located on the third and fourth storeys, and each enjoys a pleasant view of the city skyline or local 19th century terrace housing. Free wireless internet access is available in each room and throughout the house. Each room also has a high definition flat screen television with dvd player, USB, VGA (PC) and HDMI inputs, as well as accessories such as hair dryers, clock radios and fans. Each bed in the guest house is an original Victorian four poster or half-tester and has been treated to suit the period. Floors are treated with oriental rugs and especially crafted floorcloths, customarily used in the 19th century. |
The Green Room The Green Room takes its name from the Victorian colour chosen for the walls. Situated on the top floor at the rear of Brickfield Hill, the Green Room is very popular with guests seeking single occupancy. Furnishings include an antique four-poster double bed and original Victorian wardrobe. The three enormous native paper bark trees in the street below attract the attention of a wide varieity of birdlife, some seeking relief from dry conditions inland. The secluded balcony is a pleasant spot to read or enjoy the sunset across the city. |
The Ensuite Room The Ensuite Room, as its name suggests, has a private bathroom with toilet, shower and basin. Situated on the third floor in a quiet aspect, the Ensuite Room and its private balcony enjoy views of 19th century terrace housing and large native paper bark trees at the rear of the guest house (see also Green Room) The four-poster continental queen Victorian bed was one
of two beds purchased for the guest house, which were originally imported
from Holland to Indonesia in the period when it was still known as The
Dutch East Indies. The floor is treated with a thick-pile Persian rug.
The Victorian colour scheme incorporates a dado and stencilling, and is
perhaps the most elegant of all four guest rooms. There is a marble fireplace
and upholstered furniture. |
The Stencil Room The Stencil Room on the third floor is a large elegant room with a magnificent 19th century queen-size flame mahogany half tester bed. Designed as the master bedroom in the original plan, this is the only guest room in which the ceiling is decorated with a ceiling rose. The fireplace has a black and white Saint Anne marble surround. The floor is treated with a large floorcloth and colourful Turkish rug. The substantial front verandah, typical in Victorian terraces, is exclusively dedicated for the use of this room. |
The Lavender Room The Lavender Room takes its name from its bold Victorian colour scheme. Situated at the front of Brickfield Hill on the fourth floor, the Lavender Room enjoys long hours of sunshine and a light, breezy ambience. It has comforting views over the canopy of large plane trees in summer, and in winter, across Victorian roof-tops to the adjacent suburb of Paddington. The continental king-size bed is one of two beds purchased for the guest house, each of which were originally imported from Holland to Indonesia, then the Dutch East Indies, in the 19th century. The floor is treated with a large oriental rug. There is a comfortable chaise longue and original wooden fireplace. |
