A small family owned hostel that has been operating in Cairns for 20 years. We are clean and very friendly providing travelers with a real home away from home atmosphere.

The property operates a free bus shuttle to and from the city centre and can arrange a free pick up from the train and bus terminal. You can meet other guests in the lounge area, which features a TV, XBox and DVD player.

Rooms

Castaways Backpackers rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable. All our rooms are very well equipped and feature spring mattress and NO bunk beds at all, even in the dorms. All deluxe ensuite rooms also feature a TV.

Tours and Activities

The Great Barrier Reef- the great barrier reef is one of the Seven Wonders of the World and a once in a lifetime opportunity. It also happens to be the largest reef in the world. It consists of nearly 3000 individual reefs.

Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation- the daintree and cape tribulation section of the Wet Tropics contains the oldest continuously surviving rainforest on earth! This is where the ‘Rainforest meets the Reef and where you can see a variety of wild creatures in their natural environment. 

The Atherton Tablelands- the atherton tablelands is the capital of the lovely Tropical Tablelands, a land of beautiful lakes, waterfalls, rich red soil and tropical rainforest. Here the temperature is cooler, the pace is slower and there is a feeling of relaxation in the air.

Kuranda- there are three spectacular ways to visit Kuranda the Kuranda Scenic Railway, the multi award winning Skyrail Rainforest Cableway and the Kuranda Range Road which is a photographer's delight with its scenic views.

Skydiving- when skydiving you can jump from 9,000ft, 11,000ft or 14,000ft, either over Cairns or landing on Mission Beach. Please note to jump Mission Beach this is a full day and jumping Cairns is a half day trip.

Bungy- AJ Hackett Bungy Jump at 50 meters, this is the only Bungy Jump in Australia.

White water rafting- raging thunder provides an awesome opportunity for either half-day or full day rafting, on the Barron or Tully Rivers. For beginnger, the half day Barron River trip provides a great first experience with Grade 2 to 3 rapids.

By Plane
Cairns Airport is the main gateway to Tropical North Queensland.  It is serviced by major international, national and state air carriers.  It boasts international, domestic and general aviation terminals. Cairns Airport offers both domestic and international flights. Airfield operations are 24 hours, and terminal operations including shops, cafes at both pre and post immigration points are open in accordance with flight schedules.

By Train
Offering passengers a comfortable and scenic way to view the inland coast of Queensland, the Sunlander travels return from Brisbane to Cairns three times per week. The Sunlander meanders its way through the scenic, lush countryside of inland coastal towns of Bundaberg and Gladstone through to the sub-tropical region in Mackay, Proserpine and Bowen, until reaching its final destination of Cairns.

By Boat
Cairns is well serviced with marinas for boating enthusiasts. A rising number of overseas cruise ships call at the Cairns Seaport regularly. It is Australia's busiest cruise port with over 200 international and domestic cruise ship visits a year and provides a gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and a 213 berth Marina accommodating a variety of cruising vessels, superyachts and reef vessels. Cairns Seaport offers extensive and experienced ship building and repair services offering some of the most experienced, quality assured luxury repair facilities for superyachts in the southern hemisphere.

By Road
You could hire a car from another city and depending on whether the facilities are available you can drop it off to the same provider when you arrive in Cairns. Otherwise, get an airport transfer from the nearest airport to where you are staying.
