Original Backpackers was the first 'Backpackers' Hostel. Original Backpackers is a beautiful Victorian mansion recently restored to its former glory. We have been welcoming independent travellers since 1980.

The Original Backpackers is a beautiful Victorian building that was converted into backpacker accommodation in 1980.

At that time, there were Youth Hostels, but the term "backpackers" was introduced by the original owners of the Original Backpackers. We reckon that makes us the very first backpackers in the world. In those days, you could not make a reservation - you just turned up at the door and hoped you got a bed.?

We have made many improvements over the years but still offer the same warm welcome that we did back in 1980.

Set in the heart of the Kings Cross nightlife district, Original Backpackers Hostel is minutes' walk from several bars and restaurants. It is less than 30 minutes' walk from the famous Sydney Opera House. Bondi Beach is a 15-minute bus ride away.

Arriving by Train

From Central Station, it is 3 stops to Kings Cross. Exit Kings Cross station on Victoria Street - we are a 200m walk down Victoria Street.
