Ryokan Gojyuan is a small traditional Japanese style guest house, built of sandstone (circa 1855) that has been in the family since the early 1930's. A very important feature of Gojyuan is our support for Japanese cultural exchange. We hope to offer a place for regular promotion of craft and cultural workshops. We are located very close to the central business district of Sydney, in the beautiful and quaint suburb of Balmain. Transport to the city by bus is available right outside the front door or a short walk to the ferry will give you a lovely ride on Sydney Harbour. Our contact page displays a map of the local area, directions on how to get here and an option to join our mailing list. Gojyuan is a small ryokan with only two guest rooms so we are able to provide the hospitality and service that is customary in Japan. Each room is 8 tatami mat in size with private bathroom facilities and traditional decor - tokonoma ( alcove ), oshiire ( futon cupboard ) with shoji screens opening on to a verandah overlooking a Japanese style garden. We hope you will come to visit us in the near future. |
The bath house or ofuro has its own private garden and is located off the walkway. This facility is only available for guests staying at our ryokan. Breakfast is Japanese style and may consist of fish, pickles, miso, egg and rice. It is served in the lobby so you can enjoy the view and relaxing atmosphere of our koi pond. Dinner is optional and will be kaiseki style served in your room. This must be booked at least 2 weeks in advance. |
The rooms also have TV, reverse cycle air conditioning and cable internet access but all modern technology is tastefully hidden. The bedding is futon style and laid out each night after dinner. A koi pond is featured outside the main lobby area and continues beside the covered walkway between the guest rooms. This provides a quiet space where you can listen to the sounds of running water and our local birds. The perfect place to relax after a busy day. |
Matsunoma ( Pine Room ) This room is located beside the koi pond and overlooks the main garden and our Wollemi Pine. |
|
Takenoma ( Bamboo Room ) At the end of the walkway is Takenoma. This room has high ceilings and has a view of our bamboo grove. It is also used for our Samurai Tea Ceremony Classes. |
