Don't be fooled by Kasane's ramshackle appearance: it is superbly
located. Situated near the confluence of the Chobe and Zambezi rivers,
and close to Botswana's borders with Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe
it is the ideal stopover and resupply spot for travellers to points
east, west, north and south.
For years tourists have been using Kasane as a gateway to the Chobe
National Park and it is the perfect base for explorations into the
Chobe and beyond: the Savuti region or Okavango Delta and the surrounding
areas like Namibia's Caprivi Strip and Victoria Falls.
Being in Kasane is like already being in the Chobe National Park,
as the park isn't fenced so it is possible to see animals walking
through the town.
As African towns go Kasane is medium sized as it has many lodges
drizzled along the Chobe River of various standards. The town has
all the amenities that anyone would expect, like internet cafés,
bureau de changes, banks, supermarkets, restaurants, post office,
and a really large (and new) police station.
A self-drive safari in Botswana usually involves a few hardships
like bad, dusty roads, putting up and taking down camps, filling
water cans, warm drinks when the ice melts, baboons and hyenas raiding
the camp, cold showers etc.
Kasane is in sharp contrast with its lush tropical feel, the bright
blue sparkling water of the Chobe River and the call of a fish eagle
in the background.
