About Duba Plains
Duba Plains is perhaps the Okavango Delta's most remote camp, located in a pristine area that can only be reached by air. Situated on one of the low, sandy islands common to this region, Duba Plains Camp is surrounded by a wide variety of landscapes.
These range from vast open floodplains and grasslands, often isolated from the mainland by deep waterways, to dense mopane bushveld and savannah. Guests at Duba Plains Camp experience spectacular game viewing and birdwatching all year round.
The camp is built on an island shaded by large ebony, fig, and garcinia trees, surrounded by expansive plains that are seasonally flooded—usually from May to early October each year, depending on rains in central Africa.
Accommodation
Accommodation at Duba Plains Camp consists of six roomy tents with en-suite bathrooms, outside showers, and verandas offering panoramic vistas of the Okavango Delta floodplains. The thatched lounge, dining, and bar areas, along with the pool, are raised on wooden platforms to provide better views of the breathtaking scenery.
Activities
Duba Plains Camp offers a variety of activities including day and night game drives, often tracking the buffalo herd around the concession, and leisurely nature walks. Boat cruises are dependent on the seasonal water levels in the Duba area.
- Game drives in open 4x4 vehicles
- Walking safaris
- Mokoro excursions (water levels permitting)
- Night drives for photographing Africa's elusive nocturnal animals
Things to See
The vast open grasslands are often isolated from the mainland by deep waterways, but game viewing here is a dramatic experience. Thousands of buffalo are hunted almost daily by up to four different prides of lions.
Lechwe, buffalo, elephant, tsessebe, and warthog dot the savannah, while hippo can be found in the deeper channels. There are also often productive hyena dens in the area, offering great opportunities for hyena cub viewing.
The Okavango Delta’s rich diversity of habitats and lush, fertile grasses are a result of year-round water availability. Summer rains and winter floods stimulate the environment, supporting an abundance of wildlife unique even to the pristine backdrop of the iconic Okavango Delta.
Wildlife Highlights
Every aspect of the wildlife at Duba Plains Camp fascinates. The region has two prides of lions which compete in the hunt every day. The battle for survival between the lions is as stirring as the plight of the thousands of buffalo. When the lions hunt by day they provide guests with incredible photo opportunities.
Aardwolf sightings are one of the specialities of Duba Plains Camp, along with the occasional glimpse of caracal. Red lechwe, elephant, tsessebe and warthog share this savannah landscape and hippo concentrate in the deeper channels. The area often has productive spotted hyena dens that offer unique hyena pup viewing, whilst leopards can be found on the forested islands.
Birdwatching
Most of the Okavango Delta's renowned birdlife can be seen around Duba Plains Camp, including:
- Swamp Boubou
- Hartlaub's Babbler
- Swamp Nightjar
- Rosy-throated Longclaw

- Wattled Crane
During the annual flooding, the abundance of waterbirds is astounding, with herons, egrets, lapwings, and jacanas in abundance.
