Wildlife

Apart from elephants, a wide variety of other wildlife frequent the Okavango Delta, drawn by its life-giving waters. You may encounter impala, red lechwe, hippos, crocodiles, and lions. Kanana Camp is also fortunate to host an exclusive heronry where many migratory water birds come to hatch their young from July onwards.

Birdlife

This heronry is a significant nesting site for birds in the Delta. The species commonly seen here include the yellow-billed stork, marabou stork, open-billed stork, darters, cormorants, and slaty egrets.

Kanana Camp also frequently reports sightings of the rare Pel’s fishing owl. In Addition, hyenas, which are becoming rarer in this area, can sometimes be spotted.

Even more rare are the sitatunga antelope, excellent swimmers that inhabit the swamps. These antelope may submerge themselves in water with only their nostrils above the surface to evade predators such as leopards or wild dogs.

Where is Kanana Camp?

Kanana Camp is accessed via a 25-minute light aircraft flight from Maun, followed by a five-minute transfer from the airstrip.
