About Nguma Island Camp

Nguma Island Lodge offers peace and tranquillity with a spectacular and exclusive view over one of the largest lagoons in the north-west of the Okavango Delta. The lodge is situated on the banks of a beautiful lagoon bordered by palm trees, papyrus, and reed beds.

Nguma Island Camp Okavango Delta

A 50-minute boat ride brings you to the main Okavango River in the Panhandle, where tiger fish abound, and the many inlets offer excellent bream fishing. Nguma Island Lodge provides a relaxed family atmosphere, making it a fishing, mokoro, and birdwatcher's paradise.

Accommodation

Set amongst large indigenous trees, the lodge offers accommodation in eight stilted luxury Meru en-suite tents. Meals include a full English breakfast, a hot or cold lunch, and a three-course dinner.

Features of Nguma Island

Fishing

Enjoy excellent tiger fishing, except for July and August. Bream, pike, and barbel are available throughout the year. The barbel run starts anytime from mid-September and can continue through November. Spin fishing tackle is available for hire, and a full stock of lures and spinners are on sale.

Birdwatching

Nguma Island Lodge is a birdwatcher's paradise, offering views of water species from the boat or mokoro, as well as dry land and floodplain species during island and floodplain walks. Find the elusive Pel’s Fishing Owl on the numerous islands.

During the barbel run, take a 50-minute boat ride to the main Okavango River through meandering channels lined with fish eagles, goliath herons, darters, and egrets, forming your own special guard of honour.

Mokoro Excursions

No Okavango experience is complete without a mokoro ride. Get lost in the Delta, being poled on a mokoro (dugout) through papyrus and reed beds to lily-covered lagoons and islands. View elephants, lechwe, warthogs, sitatunga, and other plains game in the open, not to mention the diverse birdlife.

Boating

Enjoy a 50-minute boat ride to the main Okavango, where tiger fish and barbel abound, or try outwitting a nembwe by dropping a fly or spinner close to the grassy edge. Turn off to an inlet or hidden lagoon for other bream species and African pike.

Large boats are provided for fishing and fly-fishing, with guides/drivers native to the area who possess unbeatable knowledge of the fauna and flora. They will direct you to the perfect fishing spot or position the boat for that ideal fly cast.

You can also request a speciality barbecue for an island lunch or, for the fisherman, a sandwich lunch that won’t interfere with tying and casting.
