About Kwa Tuli Island Camp

Kwa-Tuli Private Game Reserve is situated in Botswana, Southern Africa, in the heart of the Northern Tuli Block.

A remote, private, and unspoiled African wildlife reserve, Kwa-Tuli forms part of the greater Limpopo-Shashe Transfrontier Park and offers some of the most incredible wildlife and wilderness experiences available in Southern Africa.

Wild at Tuli Island Camp

Wild at Tuli offers an exclusive, luxury tented hideaway known as "Island Camp", set in a unique location on an island in the middle of the Limpopo River, accessible via a hanging bridge.

Accommodation at the Wild at Tuli Island Camp can be provided on a self-catering or fully catered basis.

There are four tents situated under the thick canopy of the riverine forest, eternally shaded from the African sun.

Each luxurious tent at Kwa-Tuli Island Camp is spacious and includes its own bathroom with a slipper bath and a large outdoor shower, as well as private viewing decks.

The colonial furniture enhances the "Out of Africa" feel, and camp attendants will ensure that you have everything you need to relax and enjoy a special stay in the African wilderness.

Fully Catered & Fully Guided Accommodation

If you choose the fully catered option, Wild at Tuli will provide meals, snacks, and 4x4 game drives.

Dining will take place in the thatched dining and lounge area, or in the open Boma for dining under the stars.

Although game drives are included in the Wild at Tuli fully catered options, guests may use their own vehicles to view game around the reserve if they prefer.

A typical day starts with coffee, tea, and biscuits before setting off on an early morning game drive.

During the morning drive, you will stop at a beautiful spot to enjoy morning tea or coffee.

Upon returning to camp, a sumptuous brunch will be served.

The birdlife in the Tuli Block is magnificent.

Kwa-Tuli guests who enjoy birding may opt to sit at one of the hides and bird watch, or choose to go for a morning walk or fish in the Limpopo River (guests should bring their own fishing equipment).

A light snack will be served before the afternoon game drive, during which you will stop at one of the hides or waterholes to watch the sunset and enjoy a sundowner drink.

Back at camp, there is time to freshen up with a hot shower before gathering around the fire for a three-course dinner served in the dining room or under the stars.

Self-Catering / Self-Drive Accommodation

Self-catering facilities are available in the camp, including access to a kitchen with a gas stove and fridge/freezer.

A fire is lit in the boma every night, so Kwa-Tuli self-catering guests can choose to cook outside if preferred.

A map of the reserve will be provided, and self-catering guests at the Island Camp can do their own game drives, or book guided 4x4 game drives with Wild at Tuli for an additional charge.

Wildlife in the Kwa-Tuli Private Game Reserve

The Kwa-Tuli area is renowned for having the largest single population of elephants on privately owned land in Africa. Lions, leopards, cheetahs,and all major predators can be seen in this region.

The reserve's southern boundary is the great Limpopo River.

Hippos and crocodiles concentrate in the deeper pools, while leopards hunt baboons on the forested islands.

Nocturnal animals such as hyenas, porcupines, aardvarks, civets, genets, and bush babies can be observed on night drives.

Birding at Kwa-Tuli

Kwa-Tuli offers excellent birding opportunities.

Pel's fishing owl, ground hornbills, and double-banded coursers are among the 360 bird species to be seen.

More Activities at Kwa-Tuli Nature Reserve

Early morning and evening game drives in an open 4x4 take you into the heart of the reserve on a wild adventure.

Guided bush walks on the islands reveal the sounds of the bush, and the smell of oil lamps sets the mood for an authentic African safari.

Besides the islands, there are magnificent rocky outcrops that can be explored on foot.

Sundowners can be enjoyed at various spots on top of granite koppies, just a short walk from the vehicles.

Witnessing the sun setting over the African landscape is truly spectacular.

Historic and archaeological sites abound, unchanged since the days of early explorers such as Selous, Kipling, and Cecil John Rhodes.

How to Get to Kwa-Tuli Island Camp

Kwa-Tuli Island Camp is operated by Wild at Tuli and is located in the Kwa-Tuli Private Game Reserve in the heart of the Northern Tuli Block in southeast Botswana, near the Platjan Border Post.

The camp is 9 km from the main district road. Road transfers are available from the Platjan Border Post.

If you wish to fly, Polokwane is the nearest airport. From there, you can charter a flight to the Limpopo Valley airfield in Botswana, or arrange a transfer from Polokwane to the Platjan Border Post and then to the Island Camp.

The drive from Polokwane is approximately 2.5 hours.

If you are driving, Kwa-Tuli Island Camp is a 5.5-hour drive from Johannesburg, South Africa, on very good tar roads up to the border.

Travel to Polokwane, then on to Dendron, Vivo, and Alldays. From Alldays, the Platjan Border is about 40 km.

From the border to the camp is a good dirt road which does not require a 4x4 vehicle and is about 26 km.

Occasionally, the Platjan Border crossing may be flooded, so if you are driving, check to ensure that the border is open.

If it is closed, you can be diverted to the Pontdrif Border Post, where you can leave your vehicle safely locked up, cross the border by cable car, and we will collect you.
