The north-London district of Archway has in recent years become increasingly attractive to home-buyers. One of the key factors is its location: close to the fashionable suburbs of Highgate and Crouch End as well as the scenic expanses of Hampstead Heath, Archway also provides convenient travel into central London. There is much good housing, great shopping, and a fun leisure centre with swimming, sauna, steam rooms, sunbeds and a gym. Outdoor sports are accommodated at a number of local parks, with the new all-weather football pitch at Whittington Park open for spontaneous kickabouts as well as pre-booked matches. There are also plans to redevelop Archway. These include the refurbishment of Archway Tower, a controversial Brutalist skyscraper rising above the tube station, which was saved from demolition by a residents' campaign. The tower is one of several notable landmarks. Another is "Suicide Bridge", crossing Archway Road to connect Highgate and Crouch End. And the Archway Tavern, standing in the roundabout near the tower and a shopping mall, is famous for live music. There are concerts, too, in the grander surroundings of Lauderdale House, a listed 16th Century manor set in the hills of Waterlow Park, which affords breath-taking views over London.
