Ashbourne is a picturesque small market town situated at the southern tip of the Peak District, famous amongst other things for its annual Shrovetide Football match. Ashbourne - its claims to fame are probably its charm, the great number of notable characters who either stayed there, visited it or just passed through, and of course its annual 2 day Royal Shrovetide football match. This is where one half of the town plays the other half of the town at "football", using the town and surrounding countryside as the playing field, with the 2 goals being 3 miles apart. Ashbourne is also a market town, as granted by Market Charter in 1257. The cobbled marketplace hosts a traditional outdoor market every Thursday and Saturday throughout the year; complementing the wide range of individual shops in the town. Although it's market heritage is important, it has recently come under threat of closure from Derbyshire County Council. The people of Ashbourne have opposed any such moves by the council and started an online petition.
