Places to stay in AttleboroughAttleborough, roughly halfway between Norwich and Thetford, is in the unique Breckland area. This is a land of sandy heaths, with scattered pockets of indigenous pines and larger areas covered with hardy gorse bushes and tall grass. The town had a population of 9,702 as of the 2001 census, surprisingly large for a place that all too often is bypassed by those on their way to or from Norwich along the A11. There was a settlement here in Saxon times, much harried by the Danes who eventually came to rule the area until they too were displaced by the Normans after the Conquest. The Mortimer family were given the land by William I, and they remained the Lords of the manor for centuries. |
