Interestingly, in Saxon times, this quaint little town was a Royal hunting centre, though the building known as King John's Hunting Lodge dates only from the 16th-century. The lodge, a timber framed building, is quite small and in it's corner position the building looks almost as though it is clinging to others for support. None-the-less it is interesting to see and is open to the public on most days. Axbridge, is a pleasant little village built surrounding a central square around which are shops and several hotels and inns who during the summer place tables and chairs outside for summer lunches. This gives Axminster a continental air and provides the visitor with a very enjoyable experience. To the corner of the square is a steep flight of steps leading up to a Perpendicular church. This church has some rather unusual plasterwork and a 15th-century font. Axbridge is surrounded by a patchwork of fields and pastureland grazed by Cattle and sheep and the Cheddar reservoir which sees Yatching activities during the summer, is but a short walk away. Axbridge is in close proximity to Cheddar and the attraction of its giant caves, Wookey Hole is but a short drive away, so too is the delightful cathedral city of Wells. To the west of Axbridge are the seaside resorts of Berrow, Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge.
