Places to stay in BarnstapleBarnstaple is a large ancient town on the River Taw in Devon that was once a Saxon fortification surrounded by a strong wall to withstand attack from Danish raiders. The village has a rich history that includes a wooden castle that was built inside the walls. The castle stood until medieval times and by the 14th century the castle ruins decayed leaving a tree covered mound which remains today. The lovely Heritage Centre on the beautiful Queen Ann Walk, near the historic quay is a wonderful way to explore the village history. The 13th century Long Bridge is close by as well and on The Square is The Barnstaple Clock Tower built in 1862 as a memorial to Prince Albert. The medieval Parish Church and St. Anne's Chapel are both worth a visit. |
