Places to stay in BlockleyBlockley is one of the largest villages in the north Cotswolds. Blockley, a Cotswold village in Gloucestershire situated in the north of the Cotswolds between Moreton in Marsh and Chipping Campden. Blockley lies off the beaten track, sheltered in a deep valley along the north-west side of the Blockley Brook. Blockley is a pretty village, noted for the former silk mills which brought wealth and prosperity to the village during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. These mills, the largest being Westmacott Mill together with the terraces on the valley side, give much of Blockley a distinctive character. The attractive village green overlooks St Peter and St Paul a Church of Norman origins and the bowling green, which is said to be the only piece of level ground in the whole of Blockley. The streets are narrow and lined with 17th and 18th century, traditional golden, Cotswold stone cottages built into the hillside. The powerful Blockley Brook enabled the village to become one of the first to produce its own electricity. |
