Places to stay in FarmoorFarmoor Reservoir lies in an old river channel which once cut the gap which leads east towards Botley and Oxford. To the north and south is higher ground of Corallian limestone which was laid down on the Jurassic sea-bed 160 million years ago and to the west the low vale of the River Thames where it flows over soft Oxford Clay. The evidence of man’s occupation on the site of the reservoir was obtained from a five week rescue excavation in July 1974. These days the Environment Agency is responsible for the river and it is pleasure boats which ply the Thames. Farmoor has always been important for recreation. As well as sailing the reservoirs are stocked with Trout and fishing is controlled by Thames Water. A countryside walk (4 miles approx.) around the reservoirs, gives everyone the chance to enjoy the flora and fauna. Birdwatching permits are available to those who would like to watch the birdlife on the reservoir and Nature Reserves. These developments, completed in 1993, provide a number of different wetland habitats. The Willow Scrub, Grazing Meadow, Wet Meadow, Wader Pond, Reed Pond and Main pond with gravel islands and mudbanks will be studied as part of a scientific project. |
