Places to stay in GodshillOur Model Village in Godshill is a 1/10th scale version of the village of Godshill and Shanklin Old Village and chine, two of the oldest tourist areas on the Isle of Wight. Our houses are fantastic replicas of the real buildings, made with sand and cement so they weather as they age. We thatch them just like the real thing using authentic materials and methods. I'd say you need to allow an hour here to fully appreciate the details of the little scenes around the model houses. On a sunny day you can join us for a cup of tea. So you could easily combine a visit to us with a leisurely wander around the real Godshill village and take a day here. We pride ourselves on having the most detailed landscaped gardens on the Island with over 3,000 ornamental conifers and shrubs. Many are coarse bonsai treated to maintain their scale with the buildings...they really are amazing. It is called 'coarse bonsai' as they aren't in pots - you really need to visit sit to see how manicured they are. With its charming thatched-roofed cottages, delightful medieval church and a winding main street lined with tearooms, Godshill is the quintessential English Village. Centrally situated between Newport and Shanklin, the village is easily accessible and has extensive car and coach parking facilities, convenient to all the nearby attractions. Godshill's name derives from the 15th Century church set upon a hill overlooking the village and with its unusual churchyard monuments, it is among the top 10 most visited churches in the UK. The village itself is host to many attractions including the Model Village, which depicts the entire area in miniature and The Old Smithy, a former blacksmiths forge, which is now a tearoom, gift shop and fashion boutique. Contributing to the village's old-world charm are numerous shops offering local crafts and produce, such as ciders, pickles, mustards and biscuits and welcoming tearooms, serving home made cakes along with traditional pubs, suitable for all the family with beamed ceilings and cosy fireplaces. |
