Places to stay in PolesworthPolesworth is located near the northern tip of Warwickshire only 3 miles (5 km) northwest of Atherstone and adjacent to the border with Staffordshire, and is only 4 miles (6 km) from Tamworth. The border with Derbyshire is 6 miles (10 km) to the north. The town grew around a shallow crossing point of the River Anker. This crossing point along with frequent flooding of the river created fertile soils which attracted the first Iron Age settlers to the site. The Trail is a free walking trail that starts at Polesworth Abbey and takes you through the town and on to the canal and will eventually takes you up to Pooley Heritage Centre. Stroll along waymarked walks around the country park, enjoying the views, or as far as the Alvecote Priory Picnic Area, where you can relax and picnic amongst the remains of a 14th Century Benedictine Priory. Located on the former Pooley Hall Colliery site, the Heritage Centre provides an insight into mining history and sustainable energy generation (wind and solar) as well as rainwater re-use and conservation. |
