Places to stay in TintagelTintagel is situated on the North coast of Cornwall and is renowned for its association with the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. The magic of the association is captured particularly by the castle, King Arthur's Castle, which is reached by steps leading from the main land. Originally the Castle was attached to the main land but by erosion over the years a bridge had to be built. It is a hard climb to the top but well worth it. The Castle is maintained by English Heritage. There are many beaches in the area, for surfers Trebarwith and Bossiney are the main attractions, but the Castle Beach is renowned as a very safe bathing beach. For the visitor to Tintagel there are many attractions to see in the village apart from the cliffs area. Nearby is the lovely village of Boscastle, Delabole, Camelford and the pretty fishing village, Port Isaac. For visitors and locals alike, the walk from St Materiana's Church at Tintagel on the Coastal Footpath to the Castle, is a beautiful and breathtaking experience. The peace and tranquillity of the area is captured while you walk and take in the beauty of the rugged coastline. The special path is suitable for walkers and wheelchairs alike and takes you to near the Inner Walls of the Tintagel Castle. Many years ago the original Castle was split in two by the force of the sea and you now have to traverse some steep steps to arrive at the Castle gateway. (You can however approach the bottom of the steps of the Castle on a different route via a Land Rover service). The Castle, which is in ruins, was the fortress used by King Arthur in those long gone days and the Duchy of Cornwall are now owners of the property. It is operated and maintained by English Heritage. The Castle Beach, is one of the safest bathing beaches in Cornwall though pebbly. It can now be navigated to safely via newly built steps which re-opened in 2003. The famous Merlin's Cave can be discovered at the beach, which is set in beautiful surroundings. There is a Tintagel Castle Information Centre with an Exhibition and Shop, adjacent toilets and across the road a Cafe serving hot and cold food. If you visit England you must visit Cornwall and Tintagel in particular, to enjoy such wonderful scenery. |
