You cannot do day walks into the Fish River Canyon from Ai Ais but you can drive to the view points overlooking the canyon. At the resort you cannot really see the canyon as you are located at the bottom end of the canyon so you need to drive out of the canyon where there are two viewpoints overlooking the canyon. The first is halfway along the canyon and offers views over the canyon but not really down into it, the best view is at Hobas the top end of the canyon (photo above is from the viewpoint at Hobas), it is a dusty drive on gravel roads (passable in a two wheel drive with care) to Hobas and when you get there you have to pay an entry fee as it is part of the national park.
The main reasons to visit this area is the spectacular dry desert landscape and the hotsprings at Ai Ais and they do not disappoint, the barren harsh rock landscape and the intense heat is a world apart from anywhere else, with the remote location and harsh envoirnment in mind you have to give credit to the resort for what it does but things do look a little worn around the edges and service is not special, friendly yes but basic, dont expect too much and you will enjoy what they do provide, same with the food, its limited but adequate, this is not a place in the city it is on the edge of the desert, there is no internet here (and that means no wifi), barely a mobile phone signal and electricity can sometimes be an issue but when the sun goes down and the stars light up the entire sky above you and the night sounds whisper down the canyon as you cradle a drink and take it all in you realize why you came to Ai Ais.
