Beira Mozambique
Beira is the second largest city and busiest port in Mozambique.
It is a fusion of tropical Africa, continental and oriental life.
The sprawling city is built on swampy ground at the mouth of the
Pungwe River and is a hot and humid place, especially in summer
- you should take anti-malaria precautions before coming here.
The city owes its existence to the "Beira Corridor" which
is a road and railway line constructed from the coast eastwards,
providing Zimbabwe with its main outlet to the sea. Badly affected
during the war years, the city centre is quickly catching up to
its pre-war image and there is a thriving atmosphere of bars and
cafés set against a mish-mash of architectural styles.

Things to do & see in Beira:
Visiting the cathredral is a must. The Cathedral of Beira, partially
constructed from stone used in the historic 16th-century fort of
Sofala and one of the first structures built by white men in Southern
Africa, is probably the city’s most impressive landmark.
Have a meal at Biques, Biques is a festive bar (with a pool table),
restaurant about 1.2 miles (2km) from the center of Beira. The bar/restaurant
terrace overlooks the sea and excellent food and drinks are on offer.
Visit any exhibitions at "Casa dos Bicos", which is home
to regional showgrounds and trade fairs.
Buy local handicrafts from the shops in the old part of the city
to take home,as a nostalgic reminder of a trip out of this world. |
