Mopane Tented Camp is situated in Kaokoland, 5 km east of Opuwo on the C41.

The camp is built on the steep banks of one of the tributaries of the Hoarusib River.

Mopane Camp is built on communal property, and a community fee is payable by all guests on a per person, per day basis.

These fees are then paid to the community leaders, who use the money for development in specific areas, mostly relating to water and education.

The community is consulted on a regular basis regarding present and future development at Mopane Camp.

Mopane Tented Camp Accommodation

The accommodation consists of 15 luxury tents, each with en-suite bathrooms and a beautiful double bed made from railway sleepers, with innovative space for hanging clothes.

The verandah is an ideal spot from which to sit and watch the sunset. All the tents are built in the shade of large Mopane trees.

  • Half and full-day guided excursions to Himba villages are organised from the camp. Here you can see and experience traditional Himba customs.
  • Guests can take short, unguided walks that start and finish from Mopane Tented Camp.
  • The river has interesting rock formations, with cool rock pools for swimming during the rainy season.

Mopane Camp is situated approximately 5 km from Ohakane Lodge, to the east of the C41, the road which leads to Kamanjab.

The camp is built on the high, steep banks of a dry river, which is one of the tributaries of the Hoarusib River.

The tents are built in the shade of large Mopane trees.

There is a main Lapa area consisting of the restaurant and bar.

Tea or coffee is available from here. Breakfast and dinner are served buffet style, whilst lunch can be ordered from a set menu.

Dinner is often prepared on the campfire and will be of the same standard as at the lodge.

Lunch may be had at the lodge in town, where Mopane's clients are welcome to make use of the coffee shop and the swimming pool.

Please note that there is no electricity available at Mopane Camp.

Dinner is served in the open-air boma, where there is also a fully equipped bar and a cozy campfire.

This is an ideal place from which to observe the shy but curious Small Spotted Genet.

Attractions

The camp is situated in a beautiful, peaceful, and quiet area. There is a large variety of birds in and around the camp, including Yellow Billed, Red Billed, and Monteiro's Hornbill, Pale Chanting Goshawk, Black Shouldered Kite, Scops Owl, Pearl Spotted Owl, Spotted Eagle Owl, White Faced Owl, Grass Owl, Barn Owl, Rufous Cheeked Nightjar, Bare Cheeked Babbler, Crimson Breasted Shrike, European and Blue Cheeked Bee-eater, Long Tailed Starling, Golden Tailed and Cardinal Woodpecker, various Hoopoe, and many other small birds, all contributing to a continuous natural orchestra.

Permanent residents of the camp are small spotted genets, which are shy but curious visitors to the boma and tents.

During the day, guests will see tree squirrels in the area of the boma. It should be stressed that no food should be left out for the genets or squirrels.

At night, guests go to sleep with the sound of a variety of owls hooting and the calling of jackals.
