The Lagoon

The Lagoon is a Ramsar site and indeed the most important coastal wetland in Southern Africa. It is home to a large number of resident species and serves as a waystation for African and Palaearctic migrant birds.

It is also famous for its thousands of Lesser and Greater Flamingos and has been listed by Ramsar as a natural heritage site.

The Southern African Birding Society says: “Although there are many rare and special species, it's the sheer number and diversity, especially of visiting migrants, that is a major attraction.”

Walvis Bay offers a range of activities to enjoy, even if you are not an avid bird watcher or if you simply want to relax.

The city is fast becoming Namibia’s adventure capital while striving conscientiously to sustainably manage its biodiversity and care for our sensitive environment.

Thus, you can enjoy an action-packed Walvis Bay holiday on the water, such as kayaking, wind and kite surfing, sailing, dolphin and seal watching, or fishing; or on land, including quad biking, 4x4 trips into the Namib Desert, sandboarding, shore angling, or taking a leisurely stroll on a paved walkway around our famous lagoon.

Enjoy truly clean air, as crisp and pristine as it comes. If souvenir shopping is on your agenda, there are two indigenous craft markets just footsteps from our front door.
