Wind Riders Inn & Cafe is a family run affair. Até Fele, a well known wind surfer and kiter from the area, is your friendly host. Her brother, Felipe, keeps the facilities running. His wife Emelyn and her sis Ellen prepare delicious food and keep the place organized. It’s a casual place. Our goal is to provide a quiet and comfortable setting where you can relax after a full day on the water (or a full evening enjoying the famous nightlife over on White Beach!) The cafe serves food and drink morning to evening, so you don’t have to go anywhere else if you don’t feel like. The cafe also serves as the soul of the place, where guests meet other guests, get to know locals and long term residents, and share stories from around the world. |
A word on how we built Wind Riders (because it’s demonstrative of our outlook): We wanted to provide our guests modern amenities in safe and comfortable structures, so we engaged a fully accredited architect and structural engineer. We’ve built keeping in mind the possibility, though unlikely, of serious typhoon or seismic activity. At the same time, we wanted to utilize as much of the native craft as possible, and build with the local environment in mind. So even though we’ve put aircon in all the rooms, it’s unlikely you’ll actually need to turn it on. Our ceilings are high, and the roofs are made of naturally cool native material (ambolong). We have broad overhangs to keep direct sun off the windows (and the sometimes lashing rain), and the exterior walls are textured (adobe style) to mitigate the sun’s heating energy. The walls are thick – an air space sandwiched between two hollow blocks that allows the exterior block to heat, but not transfer that heat into the interior of the building. We use solar energy to heat the water for our kitchens and baths. And we have the first water-free urinal on Bolabog Beach (in the cafe CR) to help us conserve fresh water. |
Local carpenters built all of our doors, windows and furniture employing natural joinery techniques, using legally harvested Philippine Mahogany from the nearby Nabas plantations. The hand shaped and fired terracotta terrace tiles come from the small village Lezu (a jeepney ride away). Craftsmen in Numancia made our Capiz (translucent shell) windows. Specialized artisans here on Boracay carved our exposed pillars in white sand cement. And the island you can see in the far distance, across the Sibuyan Sea? That is Romblon. It’s made of marble. A day and a half of mountain biking and bangka boat ferries got us to the quarries, where we sketched out our bathrooms and kitchens. True, it would have been easier to order everything from China or Manila, but we wanted a place that, in the end, felt like it was made, by individuals, not manufactured in some distant industrial estate. We hope you find it as pleasant as we do. |
