to Stonehill
Our self catering holiday cottage lies in the Duneaton Valley on the edge
of the Southern Uplands of Scotland . A traditional stone-built cottage,
renovated to a high standard, with an enclosed garden and a south facing
conservatory giving a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside.
The cottage offers a peaceful rural setting on our working organic farm,
with easy access to major roads making it an ideal location for visiting
central Scotland.
There’s plenty on offer locally. Visit the old market towns of
Lanark and Biggar or explore Wanlockhead, Scotland’s highest village,
or visit New Lanark, a world heritage site.
Stonehill Cottage Accommodation
Our spacious cottage is furnished in a contemporary style, is fully
equipped for up to six guests and features a superb south-facing conservatory.
There is an enclosed garden with a patio area to the rear, with garden
furniture and a barbecue.
The accommodation comprises of 1 large double bedroom, 1 twin bedroom,
lounge with wood burning stove and double sofa bed, large kitchen / dining
room, utility room with separate WC, bathroom with shower over bath and
conservatory.
We supply bed linen, towels and all heating and electricity costs are
included in our prices. Prices Fully Inclusive.
Pets
Well behaved pets are welcome, strictly by prior arrangement.
Activities and Attractions
So whether you are looking for a comfortable base to explore central Scotland,
interested in the great outdoors or simply want a relaxing holiday with
great views, Stonehill Cottage is for you.
There is plenty to keep the family busy, try the Annie Macleod Experience
at New Lanark, gold panning at Wanlockhead or discover Drumlanrig Castle.
Why not visit the church, now a museum, and find out more about our local
history or, pop in to our local pub and enjoy a quiet drink and a meal.The
nearest towns are Biggar (18 miles) famous for it’s New Year bonfire
or Lanark (20 miles), well known for it’s Lanimer Day traditions
and William Wallace connections. Both towns have a wide selection of independent
shops, pubs and restaurants.
Outdoor Activities
Walking:
Stonehill is a walker’s paradise. There are seven miles of great
walking track around our land or take a hike across the hill to the village
of Wanlockhead, around the local reservoirs and for experienced walkers
there is nearby access to the Southern Upland Way.
Cycling:
The National Cycle Network (74) can be accessed at Abington, or try the
fantastic mountain biking trails at Glentress and Innerleithen
Fishing:
Just take your rod down to the bank of the Duneaton Water in front of
the cottage, or get a day permit to fish on the famous Clyde River at
Abington or the picturesque River Nith at Sanquhar.
Golfing:
There are many local, reasonably priced golf courses, where non members
are welcome.
Bird watching:
Throughout the year we are visited by lapwing, curlew, oyster catcher,
red shank, snipe, buzzard, hen harrier and grouse. A family of herons
usually nest by the Duneaton Water and you might even spot long-eared
owls in the woods.
Short Breaks are available at certain times of the year.
Around and About
Stonehill Cottage is situated on our organic farm. The land is within
an Environmentally Sensitive Area and sustains a wealth of interesting
birds and wildlife habitats. We are just a few miles from the small and
historic village of Crawfordjohn, referenced in historical documents as
early as 1147.
Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stirling, Dumfries, and the Ayrshire coast are around
an hours drive and all offer something different for a great day out.
Fly at Stonehill
Why not fly in for your visit? Our 450m long grass airstrip is suitable
for light aircraft and microlights and is only 5 minutes walk from the
cottage.
The airstrip altitude is 890 feet and is oriented east/west; Coordinates:
55deg 28.2 North 03 deg 50.5 West.
Local flying in the Southern Uplands is spectacular and we are within
easy reach of the islands, for example Bute is approximately 40 minutes
flying time.
We can arrange fuel, groceries and transport if required and landing fees
and hangarage are included when you stay in the cottage.
DIRECTIONS
Getting There by Car
Southbound from M74 Junction 13, Welcome Break Services/Abington, take
5th exit on roundabout. At 2nd roundabout take 2nd exit on to B7078, signposted
Ayr/Sanquhar/Crawfordjohn.
Northbound from M74 Junction 13, at roundabout take 1st exit on to the
B7078, signposted Ayr/Sanquhar/Crawfordjohn.
Proceed on B 7078 for 2 miles, take 2nd on left on to the B740, signposted
Crawfordjohn/Sanquhar. Drive through the village of Crawfordjohn, heading
for Sanquhar. Drive 3 miles, then turn right immediately before a small
green bridge, signposted Netherhill & Stonehill. Drive through Netherhill
farmyard and continue on for 1 mile to Stonehill farm.
