The Estate Grounds
Duchally is very firmly rooted in the beautiful Scottish countryside,
as you can see from the map of the grounds.
Duchally Lodge is located in the Duchally Country Estate, set in 27 acres
of parklands, around which you are free to wander. It is surrounded by
some of the most spectacular and picturesque landscapes of Perthshire.
Located in the heart of Scotland, the mountains, lochs and rivers create
dramatic backdrops to the area.
The duckpond by Duchally Lodge is a wonderful experience for youngsters,
with the Duchally Ducks exemplifying Scottish friendliness in their quest
for titbits!
The resort promotes an awareness of its country location. It boasts a
Silver award from the Green Tourism Business Scheme for environmental
friendliness. Wildlife is encouraged and you will see batboxes throughout.
The night sky is famously clear with amazing views of the stars and moon.
Duchally Lodge lies in the heart of some of the most spectacular scenery
that Britain has to offer, yet is only 1 hour's drive from Edinburgh and
Glasgow. You are spoiled for choice with the wealth of activities and
attractions within easy access: many golf courses (including Gleneagles,
only 2 miles away); trout and salmon fishing on your doorstep; whisky
tasting; walking; culture and history, water sports centres and many other
attractions.
Golf has to be one of the main magnets for many people to the area, no
matter what your ability or preference. Gleneagles, soon to be the hosts
of the Ryder Cup, is only 2 miles away, and is one of the most prestigious
courses in the world; Kenmore (9 holes) is arguably one of the most beautiful;
St Andrews is only just over an hours drive away; and Muirfield, Carnoustie
and Turnberry, all first class championship courses, are easily accessible.
Locally there are many excellent courses - including Auchterarder, Crieff
and White Moss.
Angling: Some of the finest trout lochs and salmon beats in Scotland are
only a short drive away from Duchally Lodge. There are a number of schools
nearby including casting clinics, clubs and stocked ponds to help you
learn and enjoy the sport of angling.
Whisky Tasting and Distilleries: No visit to Scotland would be complete
without the pleasure of whisky tasting. Duchally is located at the start
of the world famous "Whisky Trail" which runs up through the
Highlands to Spey-side, past some of the most famous distilleries in the
world. The Tullibardine distillery in Blackford is a "must visit",
as are "The Famous Grouse" and Aberfeldy Distilleries, both
with excellent visitor centres. The nearby Edradour at Pitlochry is one
of the smallest and oldest in the country.
Walking: Duchally lies at the gateway to the Scottish Highlands, one of
the most beautiful landscapes in Britain. Close by lie the Sma Glen, Glen
Quaich and Glen Lyon, three of the most spectacular areas in Perthshire,
and great walking country for gentle or strenuous walks. For the more
adventurous, Ben Lawyers, Schiehallion and the Tarmachan Ridge are set
in the mountains immediately nearby. Or simply take a gentle stroll by
Loch Tay, Loch Earn or Loch Katrine.
As well as hiking, Perthshire has a magnificent variety of gardens to
visit: Drummond Castle with its formal Italian garden; the natural heather
collection at Bells Cherrybank in Perth; the woodland and Himalayan gardens
at Cluny or the formal gardens at Kinross.
Culture & History: Scotland is steeped in history, known the world
over, and featured in much of British folklore and literature. There are
numerous castles and monuments in the immediate area: Stirling Castle,
Glamis Castle (of Macbeth fame) and Blair Castle. Edinburgh and its castle
is only an hour away, and the solitude of the island castle on Loch Leven
where Mary, Queen of Scots, was imprisoned is within easy striking distance.
A few minutes drive from Duchally you will find the largest Roman Station
in Britain, the Ardoch Camp at Braco. You can also visit the Crannog Centre
on Loch Tay and experience life as an ancient loch dweller in their thatched
island homes. Perth boasts the oldest museum in Britain as well as the
Black Watch Museum with 3 centuries of military history. The battlefields
of Killiecrankie, Glencoe and Bannockburn are also nearby.
Water Sports and Boating: Perthshire boasts a huge range of water activities,
from jetskis and white water rafting; sailing on Loch Tay to riding the
rapids at Grandtully and high action canoeing in rugged canyons.
Other Attractions: There are a huge number of visitor centres nearby,
including heather jewellery, crystal, potteries, glassware, knit ware,
horn carving, jute production to name just a few. There are also wildlife
centres such as the deer park at Glengoulandie, bird watching at the Loch
of the Lowes near Dunkeld and the RSPB nature reserve at Vane Farm. You
can also search out wildlife yourself by going on a Highland Adventure
Safari from Aberfeldy in one of their 4x4s.
Perthshire offers many wonderful places to walk relax and watch local
wildlife; red squirrel and roe deer are always easy to spot. Perthshire
is known as “Big Tree Country” and is renowned for unique
woodland heritage and a magnificent landscape of high mountains, tranquil
lochs and glens and clear rushing burns.
Perthshire is packed with High and Mighty Trees including the following:
•Tallest Hedge in the World (Meikleour beech hedge, H 30m, L 530m)
•Oldest Living Thing in Europe (Fortingall Yew, estimated 3000 to
9000 years old!)
•Largest Yew in Europe (Fortingall Yew Girth 17m!)
•One of the 5 tallest trees in Britain (a Douglas Fir near the Hermitage,
H 64.5m!)
Wherever you venture in Perthshire, you will feel close to the richness
of the natural world. Mountain, glen, river, loch and wood - each has
it’s own magic and is home to an astonishing variety of species.
There is plenty of drama away from the woodlands too. The mighty river
Tay runs through Perthshire from its source to the sea and together with
its tributaries, is home to significant populations of salmon and otter.
Many lochs attract breeding pairs of osprey, including Loch of the Lowes,
near Dunkeld. To the south, Loch Leven National Nature reserve is a wildlife
hotspot of global importance form ducks and other wildfowl
