Atholl Estates is one of Scotland’s best known Highland estates. Its history dates back to the 13th century but through the ages it has adapted to its time and today it manages a range of operations in the tourism, events, forestry, farming, property and country sport sectors. Steeped in history, the castle and gardens are open to the public for day visitors, corporate events, functions and weddings. Equal to this is the magnificent landscape of the 145,000 acre estate offering scenes of rolling farmland and wild open hills. Subject to season, keen fishermen can arrange a day on one of our three salmon rivers, or venture further into the estate to one of the three hill lochs in search of wild brown trout. Horse riding is a wonderful way to enjoy the spectacular scenery of the Highlands and as Atholl Estates prides itself on having some of the best views in the region, what better way to see them than from the back of one of our safe, steady Highland ponies? The Atholl Estates Trekking Centre is one of the oldest in the UK, having opened its doors to the public in the 1950s. However, the Atholl ponies were in use long before then for carrying deer in from the hills and travel across the moors. Even Queen Victoria enjoyed a hack during a visit to Blair Castle, so much so that she wrote about her experience of horse riding in Scotland in her diary. Land rover safaris Our drivers live and work on the estate, and will be more than happy to share their specialist knowledge of the natural area with you, detailing its rich wildlife that includes red squirrels, birds of prey, mountain hares and red deer. Every tour offers a unique opportunity to experience the wildlife, our work and the landscape, beyond the way-marked trails. Each season offers a new spectacle, and within that variety, each period of the day a different perspective. The maximum capacity of the Land Rover is six people, and most safaris are 2.5 hours in duration, which gives you plenty of time to really get to know this unique Scottish estate from a brand new perspective. Tractor tours If you want to know more about Atholl Estates, you can explore the surrounding landscape on a 90-minute vintage tractor and trailer ride. Coasting along at a leisurely pace, you’ll visit parts of the castle grounds that many visitors never get to see, including farmland, woodland and the maze of estate tracks. A fun and educational children's holiday activity, this tour is a great way to discover more of the estate. The tractor tours are one of many children's holiday activities at Atholl Estates that adults are also sure to enjoy. Wildlife For the quiet and observant visitor, each trail has its own rewards, and with many miles of way-marked trails to help you discover the wildlife of this working landscape, there need be no shortage of opportunities. In the woods, red squirrels are common, with grey squirrels only being found at the southern end of the estate around Dunkeld. The woods are being actively managed by the estate to help conserve red squirrels. Try walking our Red Squirrel Trail for a good chance of seeing one. Otters, dippers, wagtails and salmon can all be seen down at the riverside. Higher up in the moors and mountains, red deer, golden eagles, red grouse, ptarmigan, hen harriers, merlin and osprey can all be seen.
