Bowmore, Isle of Islay
The Georgian village of Bowmore nestles on the eastern shore of Loch Indaal,
in a central position on the island. Bowmore is an ideal place to stay
while visiting Islay's many fine attractions, the eight whisky distilleries
and stunning unspoilt landscapes.
Bowmore village was founded in 1768. It was the first planned village
in Scotland, and is contemporary with Edinburgh's New Town. The village
is laid out in a grid, with Main Street as the central axis. Main Street
runs from the Round Church, Bowmore's architectural gem, nearly to the
pier, where Shore Street begins.
An Cuan Bed and Breakfast is located on Jamieson Street, which branches
off from Main Street, and is close to both the Round Church and to the
world-famous Bowmore Distillery.
Our central location both in Bowmore village and on the Isle of Islay
makes An Cuan the ideal base for exploring the whole island and for visiting
all eight famous whisky distilleries.
About The Host
Your host, Fergus, was born on Islay- so he is an ‘Ileach’-
but spent most of his life living in London. He returned to Islay only
two years ago but will be pleased to help you find your way around the
island and share his local knowledge with you. Fergus has a good working
knowledge of French and Italian and is working hard at improving his Gaelic.
