Self Catering Scotland at its best!
Accommodation at Barncrosh has been developed over the years as we renovated the houses, cottages and the old farm steading and courtyard. We now offer a wide choice of styles and sizes of comfortable holiday homes.

Three of our properties have been specially adapted to cater to the needs of disabled visitors. We provide greater flexibility than most self-catering operators, offering weekly lets and short breaks.

The Farmhouse
The imposing Victorian farmhouse welcomes you as you arrive at Barncrosh. As you enter the front door you will be met by an elegance associated with Country house style. It has been the home of the Ball family for the past six decades.

The house stands in around an acre of well established gardens that lead onto a tennis court. The large kitchen and dining room has a reserved elegance and is the perfect venue for a family gathering for up to 12 people. An AGA stove creates a warm ambiance that also will cook a family roast to perfection.

The hallway leads on to the main living room entrance with an additional study. At the foot of the stairs a double bedroom is located. Upstairs you have 2 twin rooms, a king size and a double room sharing bathroom facilities and another double ensuite. All in all a perfect tranquil location for a relaxing family holiday or even a wedding location.
Sleeps 12 people. No dogs, Linen & towels provided.

Screel Cottage
Screel was newly-built in 2000. Spacious and with access for the disabled, it is equipped to an exceptionally high standard and enjoys glorious views of the surrounding Galloway countryside.

On the ground floor, Screel has an entrance hall with hardwood floor, two double bedrooms and one twin bedroom, a very spacious sitting/dining room with wood-burning fire, fitted kitchen with electric cooker and dishwasher, and a large bathroom with bath and shower.

Upstairs, Screel has a double bedroom, a bedroom with three single beds, and a shower room with WC. Sleeping 11, Screel is perfect for families and groups of friends.

The Calf House
All on one floor, the Calf House provides assisted wheelchair access (with ramped entrance). The large sitting/dining room has patio doors and a wood-burning stove. The entrance hall gives access to the fully-fitted kitchen, bathroom, separate shower room, twin bedroom, two double bedrooms and a large room with three single beds.

Tom’s Cottage
Tom's Cottage combines modern comfort with a traditional 'get-away-from-it-all' atmosphere and splendid views of the surrounding Galloway countryside. Deer sometimes appear in your own garden here.

All on the ground floor, Tom's Cottage has a sitting room with wood-burning stove, and a well-fitted kitchen/diner with electric cooker, microwave and fridge/freezer. The cottage has two twin bedrooms, two double bedrooms and two bathrooms (one with shower). Sleeps 8, it is a popular choice for families and groups of friends.

The Corn Mill Cottage
This recently-converted, self catering courtyard cottage is on two floors. The ground floor accommodation provides assisted wheelchair access (with ramped entrance), featuring a spacious living room with wood-burning stove and patio doors, twin bedroom, and shower room with WC. Upstairs, there are three bedrooms - single, twin and double - and a bathroom.

Sleeping 7, the Corn Mill is very popular with groups of family and friends. It enjoys a beautiful, SW Scotland farm location, yet is just a few minutes from the historic market town of Castle Douglas.

The Stable Cottage
Compact and cosy, the Stable provides ground-floor accommodation, with living room (with pull-down double bed), twin-bunk bedroom and bathroom with shower. Ideal for a couple with young children. Sleeps 4 people. No dogs allowed in property. Linen & towels provided and electricity & heating included in rental. It has a fully fitted kitchen and laundry room in Courtyard. Car parking is available.

The Ganary Cottage
The attractive Granary features a tiled hallway and wooden flooring with rugs. With sunny sitting room, twin bedroom, double bedroom and bathroom (with bath), this first floor flat sleeps 4.

The Granny Flat
With spacious rooms, this charming self catering two-storey flat is in a wing of our own traditional Galloway farmhouse. The tiled entrance hall leads to a pleasant kitchen/diner with electric cooker, microwave and fridge/freezer.

Upstairs, there is a spacious sitting room, twin bedroom, double bedroom and bathroom. Sleeps 4 people. The Loft

The Bullpen
The ground-floor Bullpen comprises a living room with pull-down single bed, double bedroom and bathroom.
Book the Byre with the Bullpen for your holiday group of family and friends. With their wide doorways, the ground-floor Byre and Bullpen provide easy access for people with mobility difficulties. Sleeps 2/3 people.

The Byre

The Dovecote
Located in south west Scotland, this bright and stylish first-floor studio flat is reached by an outside staircase. The open-plan design features a large sitting room with double bed and en-suite bathroom with shower. There is an integral kitchen with breakfast bar. Enjoy the late afternoon sun on the balcony. Sleeps 2 people.

The Bothy

Disabled Accommodation
We are always pleased to welcome visitors with disabilities or problems of mobility.
Three of our properties - Screel, the Corn Mill and the Calf House - provide accommodation with 'assisted wheelchair access' (category 2 in the Visit Scotland assessment scheme). Each disabled holiday cottage has been designed with careful attention to detail for your comfort and convenience.

Short breaks at Barncrosh
Whether it is a weekend away with friends, a romantic retreat, a sporting break or simply a bolthole away from the city, we provide the comfortable accommodation that you are looking for. At Barncrosh we welcome short breaks all year round with the exception of school holidays.

Short breaks can be 2 or 3 or more nights and not just at weekends. Midweek breaks are also available which prove popular with golf groups and birdwatchers taking the opportunity of the fantastic local facilities at quieter times.

Attractions and Activities
· Fishing - we have two small fishing ponds, well stocked with brown trout and rainbow trout. Please bring your own rods and tackle. Full day and half day fishing rates available. The first fish caught may be kept.

Walking
From the serious challenge of the mighty Merrick (southern Scotland's highest hill) to the coastal paths and forest trails, this is excellent walking country. Forest Enterprise have waymarked a number of forest walks.

Heritage
Follow in the footsteps of Robert the Bruce, Lord of Galloway, in nearby Glen Trool - 'land of the mountain and the flood'. Visit the majestic castles of Drumlanrig (Thornhill), McLellan (Kirkcudbright) and Dunskey (Portpatrick) and the splendid ruined abbeys at Dundrennan and New Abbey (the romantic Sweetheart Abbey).

Check out the museum at nearby Twynholm devoted to local hero and Formula One driver David Coulthard.

Gardens here are special, with gems like nearby Threave and the Logan Botanic Gardens near Stranraer. Palm trees and many other exotic plants thrive under the warming influence of the Gulf Stream.

Our roads are quiet and a pleasure to drive along. The nearby A712 Queens Way tourist route takes you through the heart of the Galloway Forest Park, past a red deer range, wild goat park and red squirrel feeding stations. Buzzards are a common sight and you may be lucky enough to see golden eagles and red kites, too.

Shops, pubs and restaurants are within easy reach. Enjoy exploring our picturesque towns and villages, like Castle Douglas Food Town (only four miles away), Kirkcudbright Artists Town (five miles) and Wigtown Book Town (36 miles). People are friendly and welcoming, with plenty of time to speak to you.

Dark Sky Park
Galloway Forest Park has recently been awarded status as the first Dark Sky Park in the UK. With over 7000 visible stars to look at you are spoilt for choice. The Milky Way is clearly visible with the naked eye. With observing instruments there is no limit other than the instrument itself.

There are a number of places where you can see the stars without any problems by stepping out from the car all of which are a convenient distance from Barncrosh.

Mountain biking in Dumfires & Galloway
Scotland's Biking Heaven!
The 7 Stanes stretches across the south of Scotland and in Dumfries and Galloway you will find five of the “Stanes”. The 7 Stanes has a reputation as one of the worlds biking hotspots. You will find mile upon mile of single track to explore with features such as “The Slab” and “Hearbreak Hill” the routes in the forests of Ae, Mabie, Kirroughtree Dalbeattie and Glentrool will push bikers to their limits.

Whether you’ve ridden everywhere or nowhere, 7stanes has something for you. Whether you are an expert or complete beginner – the 7stanes has trails for all abilities, in all styles from sweet flowing single track to monster jumps. Ride them all this year and decide which is your favourite.

Barncrosh is ideally situated in the middle of all the forests with Kirroughtree and Dalbeattie being the closest. We have secure bike storage, washing facilities for your bikes and a drying room. We also have local knowledge of bike repair centres and bike hire.

Even if the family don’t want to ride every day, there are masses of other things to do in Dumfries & Galloway, from castles and stately homes to adventure playgrounds and farm parks with every other activity you could possibly imagine in between….

Golf
In Galloway you really are spoilt for choice with the selection of 29 golf courses available. Avoid the restricted tee times and crowded fairways common across much of Scotland and enjoy our courses almost always at a time that suits you.

Fishing
There really is nowhere quite like the South of Scotland. The region is just about one of the most friendly and enticing places to visit particularly if you are a keen angler. With mile after mile of breathtaking coastline and more lochs and rivers than you can shake a rod at the South West has everything necessary to satisfy the most hard to please angler.

At Barncrosh we offer a selection of holiday cottages for varying sizes of groups. Superbly positioned for sea anglers or for trying your luck on the many rivers in the area.

At Barncrosh we have two of our own private fishing ponds located a short drive from Barncrosh. Permits for full day or half day can be purchased from reception. The ponds are stocked with trout and we allow fly fishing with barbless hooks. You may keep the first catch but all others to be returned please.

Water sports
From Portpatrick to Kirkcudbright and Kippford, the picturesque harbours along the Solway Coast provide excellent sailing. Inland, Loch Ken offers water-skiing, sailing, canoeing and windsurfing. Fishing is popular, with the choice of sea-angling or trying your luck on rivers, lochs and reservoirs.

DIRECTIONS
From the south:

Leave the M6/M74 at the border going onto A75 signposted Dumfries and Stranraer. Stay on A75 throughout, around Dumfries and Castle Douglas by-passes; four miles from the round-about at the end of Castle Douglas by-pass, take a right turn following the sign to 'Barncrosh'.

From the west of Scotland:
Take A77 to Ayr then onto A713 to Castle Douglas, turning right onto A75 midway down the Castle Douglas by-pass - then follow directions as above.

From east and central Scotland:
Join A75 at Dumfries, then follow directions as above.

From Northern Ireland:
Leaving Stranraer / Cairnryan on A75 (signposted Dumfries) for about 54 miles. Still on A75 and about 2 miles after A762 / Ringford turning, take a left turn signposted for 'Barncrosh'.
