Holiday Spottes Accommodation

The Rache - an exceptional and unusual house sleeping up to TWELVE, or book for EIGHT without the wing, (two more beds and a cot are available).

Created when eighteenth century farm buildings were made into a family home in 1995, the Rache makes a stunning and extremely individual and comfortable holiday house, with plenty of space for twelve people to spread themselves.

It stands in the grounds of a Georgian mansion house on the edge of the wonderfully named village of Haugh of Urr (the water meadows of the River Urr), three miles from Castle Douglas.

Downstairs:
Very large kitchen/dining room, with huge amounts of kitchen storage, Aga, electric oven, gas hob, microwave, dishwasher, fridge. Doors opening onto the terrace - perfect for summer breakfasts with barbecue and wooden garden furniture; overlooking lawn, tennis court and river.

Spacious sitting room with open log fire, TV and DVD, doors to terrace. Lavatory, separate utility room with freezer, washing machine and tumble dryer.

Upstairs:
Master double bedroom with ensuite bathroom, second double bedroom, two twin rooms, bathroom with bath and electric shower.

In the wing:
Large second sitting room with TV and DVD Two twin bedrooms, overlooking private walled garden (not accessible). Lavatory and shower room – uniquely decorated with pebble floor and Japanese parasols on the walls!

This lovely large holiday home is set in the grounds of the Spottes Estate and the garden that surrounds you is open as part of the Scotland’s Garden Scheme. Money raised by opening the garden is given to charity.

There are many large holiday homes in Scotland, but the Rache is special, it is a perfect venue for a gathering of family or friends to make a wonderful memorable holiday or short break. You can be totally private, yet you are just a short walk from the village of the Haugh of Urr, with its pub selling real ale and good food, and you are only three miles from the bustling market town of Castle Douglas with its boutiques and speciality shops.

A terrace that runs the length of the house, and at the side of the large holiday home are lawns to relax on and a tennis court for your use. There is a delightful short walk to the nearby waterfall or the village amenities. A self-catering holiday in this large holiday home in South West Scotland will always be fondly remembered for good times and happy holidays.

A step outside the kitchen and dining area, meals from breakfast to supper can be had on the large terrace equipped with wooden furniture and a barbecue.

Activities
The village pub has good eating, supplies milk and post office services, and newspapers can be ordered. Walking and cycling are perfect local activities (bicycles can be stored).

Sailing, waterskiing, riding, golf, fishing and country sports are available locally. Tennis is by informal arrangement.
On hot summer evenings don’t go anywhere….. just bask in the sun!

The Rache offers a comfortable base from which to explore Dumfries and Galloway, a countryside rich in wildlife and stunning scenery, famous for food, art and books with the towns of Castle Douglas “Food Town”, Kirkcudbright “Artists Town” and Wigtown, Scotland’s “National Book Town”.

South West Scotland is bounded by a dramatic coastline of scenic paths, rocky coves and sandy beaches that look over the Solway coast to Cumbria, the Isle of Man and Ireland.

There are many activities to choose from: there are over 30 golf courses, some are amongst the best championships courses in Scotland. There is a variety of fishing from loch and river fishing forttrout and salmon, to coastal fishing for bass, ray and pollock.

There are over 30 public gardens and nurseries open to the public, supporting plant varieties that thrive in our climate warmed by the Gulf Stream.

You can stroll down the drive, across the road and follow the little burn to a picturesque waterfall, or take a trip a little further afield to one of the many wonderful local beaches. For the more energetic, follow world-class biking trails at 7 Stanes, go for a day’s hike in magnificent scenery, or book anything from sailing to fishing, golf to riding.

There is nowhere better than Galloway when the sun is shining, but even if it is not you can curl up in the Rache and just enjoy the peace.

DIRECTIONS
From the M6 going north:

Take the A75 road after Gretna Green, going to west to Stranraer. Take the ring road round Dumfries and continue on the A75, through the villages of Crocketford and Springholm. About three miles past Springholm take the road left, signposted Dalbeattie B794 and Haugh of Urr.

About 2km down this road, immediately before a stone bridge, take the drive on the right with a bordering beech hedge. Where the drive splits and bears to the left, to the stable yard. This is the Rache. The Rache is approximately 1 hour from Carlisle, 20 minutes from Dumfries.

From the M6 going south:
Take the turnoff from the A74M74 to Dumfries, turn right onto the Dumfries ring road towards Stranraer and follow directions above.

From the west:
Take the A75 via Castle Douglas towards Dumfries. After approx. 3 miles take the
road right, large sign to Dalbeattie B794 and Haugh of Urr. Follow directions above.
