with many interesting places to visit including the Famous Grouse Glenturret
Distillery.
Golf features heavily in Perthshire, and courses are plentiful, ranging
from Crieff's own 18-hole course to the renowned Gleneagles courses, only
8 miles away.

Your Hostess, Karenina Johnson is an artist who regularly exhibits her
work in several locations in Scotland and has an exhibition in London
later this year.
Supper:
All food is sourced locally, whenever possible, and is of the highest
quality. Please let us know in advance if you have any special dietary
requirements and we will be very happy to make special arrangements for
you. Vegetarians are very welcome.
Crieff is a bustling market town in the Strathearn area of Perthshire,
which lies on the southern edge of the Scottish Highlands.
It is conveniently situated about an hour from both Glasgow and Edinburgh
International airports, both have direct connections with many European
mainland cities and most airports within the UK. In addition Glasgow airport
has direct connections with New York and Chicago.
Activities:
Golf:
Crieff is a superb base for golfers who wish to play on different courses
each day. From the magnificent PGA Centenary Course at Gleneagles - the
venue for the 2014 Ryder Cup - to the local 9-hole courses at Muthill,
Comrie and St Fillans, each course has its own distinctive challenges,
while at the same time offering unrivalled views of beautiful Perthshire.
The Tourist Information Office has a couple of good packages on offer:
For 9-hole courses, many of which are local to Crieff, use the Perthshire
Highlands Golf Ticket, where you can golf for three or five rounds (each
of 18 holes) for a discounted price. The courses are Comrie, Muthill,
St Fillans, Dunkeld and Killin.
The Perthshire Green Card gives you a choice of 3 or 5 rounds at the
following 18 hole courses: The Ferntower Course at Crieff Golf Club, Aberfeldy,
Alyth, Blairgowrie, Glenisla, Murrayshall, Muckhart, King James VI, Craigie
Hill, Strathmore, Pitlochry, Taymouth Castle, Green Hotel (Kinross-shire),
Whitemoss.
The Crieff Golf Club offers the Ferntower Course, an 18-hole championship
layout with a par of 71, with magnificent views over the Strathearn valley.
The Dornock 9-hole round is equally impressive. It is recommended that
you book your tee-off times in advance.
The Foulford Inn, towards the Sma' Glen has a 9-hole course.
The Crieff Hydro Hotel Golf Centre has a 18-hole course, as well as a
6-hole pitch and putt course. There is also a practice green, driving
range and 9 hole crazy golf course. Equipment is available for hire, and
tuition is available. The Gleneagles Hotel courses are now open to the
public.
Horse Riding:
Trek through the hills, or learn the basics in a covered, enclosed arena
at one of the local horse-riding schools. Alichmore Livery and Riding
Centre located approximately half a mile outside Crieff offers trekking,
tuition, and group lessons for all levels. Strathearn Stables at the Hydro
Hotel offers one-hour rides and lessons, jumping lessons, longer rides,
and evening hacks.
Cycling:
There are many quiet roads in the Crieff area, suitable for cycle rides,
and off-road cycling on the Knock, and many of the designated walking
paths are also suitable for mountain bikes. Take a trip along the back
roads to Comrie, or out to Madderty - both running along the valley so
few hills - or head upwards into the hills for a more challenging ride.
Cycle-hire:
Cycle-hire is available locally if you just want to 'play at it'. Comrie
Croft bikes, located between Crieff and Comrie, have bike hire and various
handcrafted trails in the hills behind with stunning scenery of the Strathearn
area. They also run the Hairy Coo Mountain Bike Challenge in October -
always good fun.
Fishing:
The Strathearn Valley is renowned for its challenging and relaxing angling,
amidst superb scenery. Salmon, brown and rainbow trout, char, grayling
and pike are all to be found in the area.
The Tourist Information Centre sells day permits for the Drummond Beat,
the Upper Strowan Beat (both are managed by the Crieff Angling Club) and
the Lochlane and Laggan Beats on the River Earn (which also has fully
equipped fishing huts, with help and advice available from a full-time
fisheries manager).
The River Earn is the closest place for fishing. A broad, tranquil river
at this point, it offers trout and salmon fishing.

Glenae B&B has secure storage for your rods and also offers a drying
room. One more point to mention if you catch it, I can cook it for you,
or freeze it so you can take it home and boast to your friends but not
if you are an overseas visitor!
Water Sports:
Lochearnhead Water sports Centre is just a few scenic miles away. This
is an award winning activity centre, offering opportunities for all the
family to enjoy water sports including: water-skiing, sailing, kayaking
and canoeing.
Falconry:
Perthshire Falconry Services at Braco gives the complete novice the opportunity
of handling, flying and hunting with one of the largest collections of
trained eagles, hawks, falcons and owls in Europe.
4x4 Off-Road Driving:
Crieff Hydro Hotel Off-Road Centre allows you to test your driving skills
in a 4x4 vehicle over 40 acres of mixed terrain, with an instructor guiding
you all the way. Under 17's can be driven round the off-road course, and
over 12's can try rally karting.
Tennis:
Crieff Hydro Hotel offers the facilities for tennis, squash, badminton,
table tennis, croquet, swimming and petanque.
Views in and around Crieff Whatever time of year you choose to visit
Perthshire, it is perennially stunning.
History & Heritage:
Glenturret Distillery – Scotland’s oldest working Distillery,
and the Famous Grouse Experience, where the Glenturret malt whisky is
made. At the Famous Grouse Experience, you can learn the secrets of the
making of Famous Grouse whisky test your senses - try to become a 'whisky
nose', and have a guided tour of the buildings, with a free dram at the
end.
There is also a good restaurant, both self-service and table service,
and bar. Whilst being a mile or two from Crieff, there is a pleasant walk
to the Distillery, through the Macrosty Park, and through a woodland trail,
so should you wish to taste and taste and taste.
Huntingtower Castle:
Revisit the past at this impressive castle located on the outskirts of
Perth. It has two fine towers, one of them dates from the 15th to 16th
Century, and the other is from the 16th Century.
Ardoch Roman Camp:
near Braco, this Roman Camp is one of the largest Roman stations in Britain,
with substantial earthworks dating from the 2nd Century
Fowlis Wester Kirk:
St Bean's Kirk dates back to the 13th Century, and features an original
Pictish Symbol Stone incorporated inside. It is a small but very interesting
church, and is located in an idyllic village.
Tullibardine Chapel South West of Crieff, this small chapel is a complete
15th and 16th Century Crucifrom Church built by the Murray of Tilliebardine
family.
Innerpeffray Library:
5 miles SE of Crieff. The oldest existing public library in Scotland -
founded by Lord Madderty in 1680. Various ancient books are on display,
and informative and enthusiastic curators will be happy to answer your
questions. There is also a small chapel, dating from 1508, adjacent.
Earthquake House -on the outskirts of Comrie. This small building was
where the world's first seismometers were set up in Victorian times, as
the geological position of Comrie caused it to experience many earth tremors.
Replicas of the recording equipment used are on display.
Glasgow and Edinburgh are also served by Easyjet, one of the UK’s
budget airlines. Easyjet connects to many cities in mainland Europe. Internal
connections between London and Glasgow or Edinburgh are through Gatwick
(many international connections), Luton and Stansted airports.
Easyjet also does car hire deals with Europcar. Ryanair offers discounted
flights from Europe. Please be aware Prestwick airport is approximately
half an hour outside Glasgow. However, there is a direct train service
to Glasgow city centre.

From Edinburgh Airport:
Exit the airport following signs for All Routes / Follow the signs for
Glasgow A8/M8 / You will then approach a large roundabout / Follow the
sign for Stirling M9 (NOT Glasgow M8) / At Stirling the M9 becomes the
A9 / Follow signs for Perth A9 (Dual carriageway) / Follow this road for
approximately 14 miles / Exit A9 at junction signposted A822 Crieff.
From Glasgow Airport:
Exit the airport following signs for Glasgow City Centre M8 / Follow this
motorway and pick up signs for Edinburgh M8 / Turn off at Junction 13
to Stepps/Stirling M80 and continue to follow signs for Stirling/ At Stirling
pick up signs for Perth / This road will become the A9 (Dual carriageway)
and follow this road for approximately 14 miles / Exit A9 at junction
signposted A822.
By Train:
Gleneagles Railway station is the closest station to Crieff, only 8 miles
away, but the service to Perth is much more frequent. Perth is approximately
17 miles from Crieff. Bookings for trains can be made on the above website.
