Galloway is often bypassed by holidaymakers making their way up the M74
to the Highlands, but the unspoilt beauty of this corner of Scotland is
not be missed.
This is the land where Robert Burns wrote many of his
famous poems while chasing smugglers or gazing at the wonderful beaches,
hills, moors and glens.
You can visit some of the places he frequented like the Selkirk Arms
in Kirkcudbright where it is said he wrote the Selkirk Grace, or spend
an afternoon at his farm at Ellisland.
Explore the many castles, including Threave Castle,
Caerlaverock, or the romantic fairytale castle of Drumlanrig.
If it is Abbeys you are looking for we have our fair share here, including
Sweetheart Abbey and Dundrennan Abbey, where Mary Queen
of Scots spent her last night in Scotland.
If it is retail therapy that your after Kippford is well placed to visit
the three theme towns of Galloway:
Castle Douglas Food Town, with approximately fifty local
businesses involved in either producing or selling food and drink, it
is easy to see why Castle Douglas has been designated a Food Town.
The town has an very attractive theatre with a full programmer, why not
take a look to see what's on! at Lochside Theatre.
Kirkcudbright, Artists' Town, a pretty fishing town,
where behind the harbour the streets have housed generations of creative
artists, a tradition maintained today by a flourishing colony of painters
and craftworkers. There is nightly entertainment during their Summer Festivities.
Wigtown Book Town, Scotland's Book Town with over quarter
of a million books to choose from, and also the bonus of being right next
door to Bladnoch Distillery - Scotland's most southerly
whisky distillery!
