Directions: By car- on the Edinburgh bypass (A720), drive east following
signs for A1 Berwick-Upon-Tweed until you get to "Old Craighall Roundabout"
(on the A1 road). Now turn left onto the A1 following signs for Edinburgh.
After about 1 mile you come to another roundabout with ASDA (supermarket)
on your left. Go straight over and you come up to another roundabout.
The Area: In the 19th century it became a very fashionable bathing resort for certain
classes and the sandy beach was know by such as sir Walter Scott and King
George IV. It also had its own industry and was a minor centre of fishing.
In the early 19th century Portobello was made a Burgh but was incorporated
into the city of Edinburgh towards the end of the century. One of Portobello's claims to fame was its outdoor swimming pool, well
known to many in the central belt of Scotland during their Summer vacations,
but also where Sean Connery worked as a life guard in his younger days.
