Attractions and Activities
Edinburgh, Scotland's inspiring capital, is a city of contrasts - where
the lofty tenements and winding closes of Old Town make way to the grace
and elegance of the Georgian New Town.
With Edinburgh Castle dominating the skyline, this
UNESCO World Heritage site offers the perfect balance of all things traditional
and contemporary.
Discover world-class museums and galleries, take a walking tour on an
open-top bus or even visit the city's own zoo. From the world famous festivals
to fabulous shopping, you'll be spoilt for choice.
No matter how high your expectations, Edinburgh will surpass them. It
really is one of Europe's most stunning and vibrant cities; the castle,
the gardens, the royal palace might be the city's icons, but there's so
much more to discover.
In fact, there are thousands of things to do in this city. We've taken
a very Apex approach to the whole affair, and only selected the very best
in our top ten Edinburgh attractions.
1. Edinburgh Castle
Towering over the city and dominating the skyline, the instantly recognizable
Edinburgh Castle is a powerful Scottish symbol. Learn all about this historic
landmark with the daily guided tours, view the Scottish crown jewels,
and see the 1 o'clock cannon being fired.
2. City Sightseeing Tours
Edinburgh's 'hop on, hop off' open top bus tours offer an ideal way to
see all the sights of the Scottish capital. Tickets are valid for 24 hours,
so they are perfect if you only have a day or two to spend in the city.
3. Holyrood Palace & The Scottish Parliament
You've seen the Castle? Well at the other end of the Royal Mile you'll
find Holyrood Palace, which is the Queen's Official Residence in Edinburgh.
And just opposite, you'll find it impossible to miss the Scottish Parliament.
There's no denying this is one of the most impressive modern buildings
in Europe.
4. Royal Yacht Britannia
From Queen Elizabeth II to Sir Winston Churchill, some of the world’s
most famous and influential people have been welcomed aboard this magnificent
ship. Now it's your turn to discover the splendour of this royal residence.
5. Edinburgh Dungeons
At the other end of the attraction spectrum, is the infinitely more blood-curdling
Edinburgh Dungeon. Did you know one solution to the plague was simply
to build over infected areas? Now you can discover what lurks within and
beneath.
6. The Real Mary King's Close
Beneath the Royal Mile lies Edinburgh's deepest secret - a warren of hidden
streets where real people lived, worked and died. For centuries they have
lain abandoned and forgotten... until now! Step back in time on a tour
of Mary King's Close and witness 17th century life- and afterlife- in
plague ridden Edinburgh.
7. Our Dynamic Earth
If the weather isn't looking great, then another sure-fire hit is Dynamic
Earth, which is a Tyrannosaurus-hop from the new Scottish Parliament.
The whole family will take a journey through Earth's history from the
dawn of time, with plenty of interactive fun to keep the kids well-and-truly
happy.
8. Camera Obscura
View the city from a different angle with the Camera Obscura Show, where
you'll see live moving images of Edinburgh projected onto a viewing table
through a giant periscope. Fantastic views of Edinburgh, and three galleries
packed full of optical experiences will keep you entertained.
9. The Scotch Whisky Experience
Take a swirling, bubbling barrel ride through a replica distillery as
you become part of the whisky making process, with expert tour guides
and whisky advisors on hand to help you discover new aromas and flavours
leading you to your perfect Single Malt Whisky.
10. Edinburgh Zoo
Meet over 1000 different animals in this beautiful parkland setting on
the outskirts of Edinburgh. Exciting attractions, daily events and activities
are scheduled throughout the year. The Penguin Parade is a particular
favourite amongst visitors.
Activities in Edinburgh
Make the most of your weekend break in Edinburgh and fit in a few activities
whilst you're here. With such a wide choice, we've selected a few of our
favourites to help you on your way.
Golf Breaks
You're in Scotland, so it only seems fair to mention something about an
obscure national game that's played with clubs and little dimpled balls.
As any Scot will tell you, the game was born here - which means you'll
find an almost bewildering selection of very fine courses within easy
reach of central Edinburgh (including some excellent municipal ones).
Cycling Breaks
If fairways and greens aren't your thing, then how about a cycling break
in Edinburgh? Fancy a ride in the Pentland Hills? There are excellent
cycle paths, and the route starts on the Union Canal. A perfect way to
spend a Sunday afternoon.
Walking Breaks
From a gentle amble round the old cobbled streets of the Royal Mile, to
a trek up Arthurs Seat, Edinburgh has many routes to satisfy your walking
boots. For the perfect walking break, you really can't beat Edinburgh.
Climbing Breaks
For the adventurous, why not try scaling the walls of Alien Rock, a rock
climbing wall in Newhaven. Or how about the "world's largest indoor
climbing arena", the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena at Ratho.
With top roping and lead walls, competition wall, bouldering room, gym,
studio, spa and children's soft play, it's a climbers paradise.
Surfing Holidays
Pease Bay, a mere 40 minute drive away from Edinburgh offers great surfing
conditions all year round.
Skiing / Snowboarding
For those who like the temperature a little lower, why not try the slopes
of Midlothian Snowsports Centre, Hillend. Catering for the whole family,
it has challenging slopes for all boarders and skiers.
Clay Pigeon Shooting
Fancy a real challenge? Why not try your hand at clay pigeon shooting
in and around Edinburgh? Cluny Clays and Scottish Clay Shoot offer great
packages for individuals and groups, the perfect alternative day out.
Fishing Breaks
For those happiest relaxing by a river, Edinburgh has many superb fishing
lochs nearby. Ideal for trout and salmon fishing, the Pentland and Moorfoot
hills provide fantastic pools full of 'bait-hungry' fish.
Nae Limits
Finally, Nae Limits is for adrenaline junkies of a different persuasion
– think white water rafting, kayaks, freefall abseil and anything
else with an “aaaarrggghhh” in the title.
Shopping Trips to Edinburgh
With names like Louis Vuitton, Emporio Armani, Harvey Nichols, and Jenners,
plus a variety of shopping malls, Edinburgh has more than enough to keep
even the most ardent of shopaholics happy.
Whether you're searching for that perfect pair of heels, the elusive
dress that hangs perfectly, or a handbag to die for, Edinburgh is sure
to deliver. Although Princes Street is the obvious destination, George
Street and St Andrews Square are where the real carrier-bag action is
to be found.
Jenners Edinburgh
Princes Street is home to one of Britain's oldest department stores, Jenners.
With over 100 departments offering a variety of high quality goods, Jenners
has been trading since 1838 and is as much a part of Edinburgh as the
Castle itself. With a Royal Warrant, it enjoys continued success and definitely
deserves a visit.
Louis Vuitton Edinburgh
Shoes and bags a plenty are available at the stylish Louis Vuitton store
in St Andrews Square. Adjacent to the ever popular Harvey Nichols, the
Louis Vuitton store always proves popular with both locals and tourists
alike.
Emporio Armani Edinburgh
Italian designers Armani recently opened their doors to the Edinburgh
public, showcasing their range of luxurious fashion on the now famous
'Multrees Walk', home to many designer shops. The last word in Italian
style, available all year round.
Harvey Nichols Edinburgh
For the fashion conscious, Harvey Nichols houses many top designers, as
well as an abundance of shoes, cosmetics, luxury food and a fourth floor
restaurant with superb views of the city. Shopaholics beware; it's a day
out in itself!
Sightseeing Tours in Edinburgh
Daunted by the sheer volume of sights to see in Edinburgh? Why not book
yourself on one of the many organised tours of Scotland's capital city
and ensure you don't miss a thing! The good news is, all the tours are
within walking distance of our three Edinburgh hotels.
Literary Tours in Edinburgh
For those with a passion for literature, Mercat Tours offers an enthralling
'Writers by the Mile' tour, telling the story of famous writers both old
and new, from Robert Burns to Ian Rankin.
