Edinburgh hotelChannings, the friendliest hotel in Edinburgh where you'll enjoy country-style tranquillity in a city setting and be charmed by our people.

Channings boasts a famous former resident, the intrepid polar explorer, Sir Ernest Shackleton who lived here from 1904 until 1910.

The uppermost floor of the hotel have now been renovated in a maritime style in recognition of Sir Ernest Shackleton's endeavours, with portholes along the corridors and an Edwardian theme running throughout the room décor. Enjoy viewing some of his memorabilia on show during your visit.

As well as being a delightful home-from-home, many of the rooms offer breath-taking views of Edinburgh, while others overlook the private gardens (which are yours to enjoy in the warmer months as well as a sun terrace which captures the sun all day)!

Channings Hotel Accommodation

During your stay you will be accommodated in one of our 41 individually decorated bedrooms. Rooms are striking yet elegant, tailored and classic, with a combination of textured fabrics such as linen, silk, suede and velvet and deep, rich colours - providing comfortable and relaxing surroundings.

You may wish to choose a room offering a slipper roll top bath or a jacuzzi (big enough for two!).

Channings Suites
Channings Hotel in Edinburgh has six luxury suites, each with private drawing room, separate bedroom and large bathroom (separate bath and shower). All the suites have great views, either over the western part of Edinburgh or the hotel's own private gardens.

As with most of the hotel rooms at Channings, the suites contain a mix of antique furniture, prints, drawings and memorabilia; but also use rich, contemporary fabrics to create interiors that are striking, beautiful and ultimately very relaxing. Just what a hotel room should be, and a great way to visit Scotland's capital city.
Please note all our bedrooms are non smoking.

Superior Bedrooms
Relax in a superior room at Channings...
As with all the hotel rooms at Channings in Edinburgh, our Superior Rooms are a creative mix of antique and contemporary, with individual styling and quirky detail. After all, every visitor to Scotland is different from the next, so we have mixed up the styles a little.

Our Superior hotel rooms are typically larger than the Unique Rooms and have more spacious bathrooms, some with Jacuzzi baths, and the best views of Edinburgh. One has a four-poster bed and belongs in the pages of a country-house magazine; equally we can offer something a little more pared-down, or bolder, or more contemporary, if that is your preference.

Within this category of hotel room, we have two Shackleton Rooms, named after the famous Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton who made Channings his Edinburgh home for a while; these are styled using striking black-and-white photography of his expeditions. Please note all our bedrooms are non smoking.

Shackleton Bedrooms
In recognition of the great Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, who lived at 14 South Learmonth Gardens, we have created three wonderful, oversized Shackleton Suites and two (slightly smaller) Shackleton Rooms.

Each of the Shackleton Suites was previously two hotel rooms, so the new suites and bathrooms are generously proportioned, and have separate baths and walk-in showers.

Contemporary styling uses bold colour, striking black-and-white photography of Shackleton's expeditions to the coldest places on earth, and underfloor heating to ensure you stay a lot warmer than he did. Please note all our bedrooms are non smoking.

There are 41 hotel rooms at Channings in all - no two are quite the same, in either layout or decor.

One of the Channings townhouses, 14 South Learmonth Gardens, was home to Sir Ernest Shackleton, the Antarctic explorer, while he was secretary of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society between 1904 and 1910.

We have named our top-floor hotel suites after Shackleton and his fellow adventurers, and are proud to display prints of black-and-white photographs that were taken on the expeditions, and a copy of a journey planner.

Check in is at 2pm and check out by 12pm. It is often possible to check in earlier and we will try to make your room ready for you as soon after you arrive as is possible. We are more than happy to store your luggage if you are arriving early and again on departure.
