Fort Augustus is located at the southern end of Loch Ness on the Great Glen.

Location:
We are half way between the capital if the Highlands Inverness and Fort William. The village was originally called Cill Chuimein "The church of Chuimein". Chuimein was the Abbott of Iona and he established a church here in the 6th century.
In the 17th century the name changed because of the fort that was built in the village. Fort Augustus, was named after the son of King George, Augustus, the Duke of Cumberland.

Running through the village is the River Oich and the Caledonian Canal. The Canal was built by Thomas Telford in the early 1800s, it stretches between Inverness and Fort William and is linked by a series of natural lochs, there is a flight of 5 locks from the top of the Canal at Fort Augustus down onto Loch Ness.

Activities:
The village is a hive of activity as many boats pass through the lock system, this is a impressive sight to say the least! Fort Augustus has lots to offer, the views of Loch Ness are stunning and there are many beautiful walks, the Great Glen Way passes through the village so we make a great place to stop and recharge your batteries, there is also an excellent golf course.
There is a regular boat service that sails on Loch Ness from Fort Augustus and there are many events take place throughout the year such as Folk Music Festivals and local ceilidhs, check with the local Tourist Information Centre for further details, this is situated directly across the road from Scots Kitchen.

Fort Augustus makes a great base for your holiday, you can visit the best the loch Ness area has to offer, the iconic Urquhart Castle is only a 30 minute drive away. Inverness, the capital city of the Highlands and Fort William "the hill walking capital" are less than a hours drive from us. The amazing Glencoe is less than 90 mins away as is the Isle of Skye.
