The area has been used for locations of numerous movies - most recently
the first two Harry Potter films - where the Quidditch matches were filmed
against the background of Glen Nevis (which was also used for Braveheart,
Rob Roy and Highlander III). Special effects were used to show Hogwarts
School of Witchcraft and Wizardry sitting on a ridge of Ben Nevis. The
Glenfinnan viaduct and station appeared with Hogwarts Express showing
the spectacular Road to the Isles along the famous West Highland Line.
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban has recently been filmed at Glen
Coe (see photo).
Highland locations used for Rob Roy and Braveheart also included Loch
Arkaig, Loch Morar, Rannoch Moor, Loch Leven and Glencoe. Castle Tioram
appeared in Rob Roy and the Highlander TV series.

Introducing Your Hosts
Why Scotland???? Because of the weather! This is the
question that guests have asked us thousands of times since we started
our new venture in Scotland in May 1995. We fell in love with Scotland
after first visiting some 20 years ago. It may sound strange, but when
we came back here, it felt like we were coming home. Everyone was so friendly
and laid back that we just felt very much at home and returned several
times after that. It was Mieke's dream to open a guest house, but Bert
didn't take her too seriously at first! He was a PR and advertising manager,
and Mieke was working as a secretary. We had a nice house, big car and
Bert had his motorbike - our lives in the Netherlands could be described
as very comfortable.
But.... money wasn't everything. Our jobs were stressful, we lived in
a very densely populated area and we began to wonder if we just had to
carry on like this until we retired.
Living in Scotland with its scenery, and peace and quiet became a very
attractive idea and once our decision was made, we pulled out all the
stops to make our dream come true. And now when guests ask if we are homesick,
all we do is point to the mountains and tell them that no-one could feel
homesick in this beautiful country!
With our previous experience working in an international company and as
a secretary, our multi-lingual skills are very useful when meeting visitors
from all over the world. We endeavour to greet all our overseas guests
in their own language whatever country they are from. We certainly have
no regrets about moving to Scotland and we truly enjoy welcoming people
to Lochan Cottage and making them feel at home here.
