Attractions:
King's Theatre
The Theatre Royal was designed by Frank Matcham and opened in 1904. The
theater is primarily a receiving house for touring musicals, dance, comedy
and circus-type performances. The theater provides a prominent stage for
local amateur productions and also stages an annual pantomime.
Pavillion Theatre
One of Glasgow's oldest theaters, the Pavilion Theater of Varieties opened
in 1904 as a music hall. The building has remained relatively unchanged
although the technical sound and lighting systems have been upgraded over
the years. The theater was designed by Bertie Crewe and was regarded as
luxurious for its time.
In the 1930s, the Pavilion began producing pantomimes and in more recent
times it has also worked as a receiving house for plays and alternative
comedians.
The Pavilion Theater is now the only privately run theater in Scotland
and one of a few unsubsidised independent theaters left in Britain outside
London. The theater mainly runs populist productions and pantomimes, as
well as comedians and touring bands on the 'nostalgia' circuit.
Citizens Theatre
One of Glasgow's most popular theaters The Citizens Theatre is in the
Gorbals area of Glasgow and produces a catalog of work from professional
productions for its main auditorium and studio spaces. While the Citizens
Theater building retains some of the original Victorian architectural
features, it has undergone additional renovations and expansions over
the years. It now includes the 500-seat main auditorium, and two studio
theaters.
Tron Theatre
From its early years as a theater club, the Tron has grown into a thriving
Glasgow venue. Home to the award-winning Tron Theater Company, it is a
producing house for contemporary theatrical work and also functions as
a receiving house for an eclectic visiting programme of theater, comedy
and music from Scotland, the UK and abroad. Its Education and Outreach
department offers a range of activities from drama workshops for children
and young people, to creative writing for adults and professional development
opportunities for theater students and practitioners.
