Activities and Attractions

Pedal, trek or paddle ...
If you are walking or cycling the Great Glen Way we are just minutes from the track, one mile north of Laggan Locks - either one or two days' walk from Fort William, depending on your pace. If you want to escape into the hills we're surrounded by 'Munros' in Glen Garry, Glen Dessary, Glen Spean and the Great Glen.

Or if you prefer to paddle, the Garry, Spean, Roy and Moriston rivers are within easy reach - and the Caledonian Canal runs just behind the hostel. Tour and explore ..

We're in an excellent location for exploring the Highlands and we can advise on day trips from here taking in sights such as Glenfinnan, the sands of Morar, Loch Ness, the Isle of Skye, and the castles of Urquhart and Eilean Donan.

Walks and Cycling
There are many walks to choose from in the Great Glen and on these pages we thought we'd give a few examples of what's on offer. These are some of our favourite walks, starting with some gentle short walks close to the hostel.
We've included some sketch maps but these are intended as an approximate guide only.

Please make sure you are adequately prepared before you set out on your walk: carry a map and compass, and know how to use them. The local OS Landranger 1:50,000 map is "Fort Augustus and Glen Albyn area" (Sheet 34). And don't forget to take appropriate clothing, footwear and food - the weather here can change very rapidly!

With no less than 59 Munros within a 20 mile radius of us, the Hostel is a great place to base yourself for getting in to the hills. There's so much to choose from - the hills around Loch Quoich, Loch Arkaig, Glen Spean, Cluanie - and of course by Loch Lochy itself - so we've just included brief descriptions of routes on the hills closest to us.

The hostel is only yards away from the Great Glen Way, Scotland's new long distance footpath, which runs from Fort William to Inverness.

There's plenty on offer for mountain bikers around the hostel. The Great Glen Way is a dual-use path, and the former Great Glen Cycle Route tracks can be utilized although they are no longer signposted; and there are many other tracks to choose from, as well as scenic rides on quiet roads.

Short Walks
The hostel is situated 11 miles north of Spean Bridge on the A82 in a small settlement called South Laggan, halfway between Loch Lochy and Loch Oich. If you are using a GPS to find us, please note we are in South Laggan - not Laggan near Newtonmore, which is 40 miles east of here on the A86.

If you are walking the Great Glen Way, we are just off the Way about 1 mile north of Laggan Locks. There are signposts directing you to the hostel from the footpath.

Citylink services 915 and 916 between Glasgow and the Isle of Skye pass by the hostel and will stop nearby if requested. There are three buses in both directions every day. Service 919 between Fort William and Inverness will also stop at the hostel; there are five buses each way every day in summer.

The nearest railway station is in Spean Bridge. From Monday - Saturday there are three trains a day from Glasgow Queen Street Station, and two trains a day on Sundays in summer. The nearest airport is Inverness, 50 miles away.
