The Barn has the double benefit of lying at the heart of Killin, within
easy access of local shops, restaurants, travel venues and places of interest,
while at the same time offering superb views of the surrounding countryside
through ample, light airy windows.
Besides space for parking, the garden and other areas are available for
visitors to use. The accommodation has also been awarded a silver 'Green
Tourism' award by Visit Scotland.
Am Bathach - The Barn Accommodation
Available as double or family accommodation, The Barn is a detached stone
building which has been modernized to a high standard and offers comfortable,
undisturbed accommodation next to the house of its proprietors.
There is ample parking alongside The Barn, while inside the property
itself there is the added bonus that although the main bedroom can sleep
2 - 4 of a family, there is a separate downstairs area which can be used
to accommodate a number of them.
This may be preferable if you are in a group which includes adolescents
or people who are unrelated. A reduced tariff is negotiable for those
other than the main couple.
There is also a kitchen which can be used to cook your own meals (apart
from breakfast of course, which is provided), and includes a washing machine.
Any clothes washed can be tumble dried for you.
The bathroom has a formidable power shower which can be turned down if
required. Upstairs in the bedroom/lounge area there are spectacular views
through several windows which gives the delightful impression of having
gone back in time almost to a traditional Highland village at the turn
of the last century.
In-house entertainment includes a wide range of books, games and a television
and DVD with a selection of films with a Scottish theme to them.
Facilities
The fact that Am Bathach is affiliated to what was until recently a listed
building, the status of which recognized its historical importance, belies
the up to date nature of The Barn itself. The interior is fully modernized
and imaginatively decorated.
It also offers additional accommodation for the visitor's use, so that
besides the main bedroom and en suite bathroom, there is a separate dining
area which can be used for other purposes, with a well equipped kitchen
to boot.
The keynote of The Barn is privacy. The fact that it only accommodates
one couple or family at a time means that the proprietors are able to
offer personalized service whilst at the same time allowing you to come
and go as you please. For those without transport we are happy to collect
you from the nearest road or rail terminal.
Breakfast
A delicious breakfast of generous proportions is delivered each morning
at a time to suit the visitor. The menu for this consists of tasty as
well as healthy eating options with a wide selection of courses that rely
on local and home baked produce.
Green Tourism
In small ways we hope this will help us to mitigate our environmental
impact, allow us to become more energy efficient and meet the needs of
environmentally conscious visitors through contributing to eco friendly
tourism within our area.
Below are some such measures which you can expect to find implemented
at The Barn:
. We try to minimize our waste by reducing, reusing and recycling materials
such as glass, paper, aluminium and plastic.
. We compost vegetables and garden waste in a degradable container and
don't use pesticides.
. Our energy is supplied by Powergen.
. All lights are moving towards energy efficient light bulbs.
. We use and shop locally for fresh, homegrown, organic produce and reduce
food miles where possible.
. We are recycling water from rainfall by the use of a degradable water
butt.
. As members of the RSPB we are creating a wildlife area in the garden
and guests are invited to read and contribute to a nature diary monitoring,
particularly the birds, in it.
. All cleaning materials are phosphate and chlorine free.
. We use and provide recycled stationary.
. Eco friendly jute shopping bags are provided for visitors to use.
. We provide timetables and information on local public transport and
encourage its use.
. A range of maps, guides and information on local walks, cycle paths
and other outdoor activities are available to allow visitors to offset
their carbon footprint while relaxing on holiday.
. We have met all the criteria for our participation in the Visit Scotland
walking and cycling scheme to provide more than adequate accommodation
for those who have chosen to explore the Highlands in this eco friendly
way.
. Finally, 'Am Bathach' - 'The Barn' is a 100 year old building restored
using traditional materials and recently redecorated in natural colours
using environmentally friendly paints with low VOC's) Volatile Organic
Compounds).
Our complete Green Policy is on display in 'The Green File' with a section
on how you may help to implement this. Visitor feedback and suggestions
are welcomed through a questionnaire.
