Welcome
to Fold Cottage, this cottage is only 20 miles north
of the border, so it is about 350 miles from London and 40 miles south
of Edinburgh.
Fold Cottage is ideally situated in the heart of the Scottish
Borders, an area of the Country often neglected by tourists.
It offers a wealth of interesting places and country to explore.
The cottage itself is equipped to the highest possible standard and being
a steading (farm building) conversion benefits from a wonderfully picturesque
stone exterior and very modern interior.
The Fold Cottage Accommodation
Self-catering in Scotland and in particular the Scottish Borders is an
ideal way of visiting a fascinating country.
The cottage sleeps four in two bedrooms, one en suite, plus a family bathroom
and a downstairs cloakroom.
The master bedroom has an en suite shower room and is equipped with a
double plus a single wardrobe, plenty of drawer space, and a five foot
bed.
The second bedroom is served by the family bathroom just across the landing
and has two three foot beds and a small wardrobe.
Bed linen and towels are included as is gas and electricity.
The Fold Cottage Facilities
The Fold is furnished and equipped to a high standard (easily up to 4
star).
The kitchen equipment includes a washer/drier and a dishwasher, a four
ring gas hob, an electric double oven and microwave.
In addition we even have a "hostess trolley" and a Corby trouser
press In the garden there is a table and chairs which can be used on the
'decking'.
The kitchen is open plan with the living room and in addition, there is
a sizeable conservatory.
Outside there is a reasonably sized garden for the exclusive use of guests
and there is ample parking for two cars.
A television is provided, equipped to receive 'freeview' channels.
A DVD player and a separate CD player are also available.
One well behaved dog is welcome at a small extra charge.
The village, around a mile away, has a pub providing very good food, in
a bar or a restaurant, shops (Butchers, Post Office/General Store and
a Grocers plus a Co-op Store).
There is also a Fish and Chip Shop and a Chinese Take-away.
In addition, Melrose boasts several good restaurants and the Dryburgh
Hotel (next door to the ruins of Dryburgh Abbey) has a superb restaurant.
Activities
The River Tweed flows through St. Boswells and there are wonderful walks
along its banks.
Fly fishing is a popular pastime on the river.
In addition to the fly fishing in the Tweed mentioned above the cottage
has various attractions within a short drive.
Melrose, Jedburgh and Kelso are all within a short drive, each of these
has interesting remains of an Abbey.
Berwick-upon-Tweed is only about 30 miles away.
There are plenty of other interesting places to visit, many of them listed
in our folder and with information leaflets in the cottage.
Attractions
Edinburgh, only about an hours drive away, the towns
of Berwick, Jedburgh, Kelso, Melrose Peebles and Selkirk are all worth
a visit.
(We find that Edinburgh is best visited via a well signed park and ride
reached up the A68 to just beyond the Edinburgh ring road A720).
Jedburgh Kelso and Melrose all boast the ruins of abbeys and are on the
long distance path called the Abbeys Way.
Kelso is also famous for its National Hunt Race Course
and all of the towns mentioned support Rugby Clubs. Indeed the game of
Rugby Sevens was invented by the Melrose Club and a sevens tournament
is still played there every year!
Also nearby is Coldstream (original home of the Guards
regiment of that name, with an interesting historic regimental museum).
A little further away into the Region of Dumfries and Galloway,
there is the small market town of Moffat.
There is a very picturesque drive there, which route is described in detail
in the folder in the Cottage.
Do not use the usual "Sat Nav" route which
will take you on a good road but you will miss the scenery.
The river Tweed is a mile away, Floors Castle, and Abbotsford
(home of Sir Walter Scott) are within ten miles as are three of the famous
Borders abbeys.
The nearby Eildon Hills were the site of the Roman settlement
of Trimontium, centre of the Roman area north of Hadrians Wall.
These hills can be seen from the front of the cottage.
The remains of the Roman settlement can be viewed (a
turning off the Melrose road.)
