The Barn - a Country Inn with a family-friendly atmosphere
The Barn is at the heart of Cologin and it is so much more than just a
pub. Describing the Barn's unique ambience is not easy - suffice to say
that once you've been you will return! Our chef (with well over 30 year’s
experience) is dedicated to preparing flavoursome meals, cooked to order
using the best fresh local produce.
We offer an imaginative a la carte menu alongside daily specials with
something to suit all tastes. Vegetarians are particularly well catered
for. While the food is a great attraction, the Barn's unique atmosphere,
friendly staff and local musicians who play regularly throughout the year
are just as important to our customers.
The Barn has won many well-deserved awards and citations over the years
and you'll find it mentioned in the most discerning guide books including
'CAMRA', 'Scotland's Best Kept Secrets', 'Scotland The Best' , the Herald
Newspaper Good Pub Grub guide and the 2007 Good Beer Guide.
Locals from Lerags and other nearby villages are loyal Barn patrons.
Around and About Cologin & Oban
Working up an Appetite Highland Style!
Loch Gleann a'Bhearraidh is just under one mile's gentle walk up through
the forest in the hills above Cologin and the views are quite spectacular.
The walk to the loch is part of a waymarked Forestry Commission trail
through our hills and the gentle incline means that it is suitable for
all ages and abilities.
Walking in our hills is a great excuse for working up a thirst. Not
that you need an excuse to enjoy everything that the Barn, our very own
country inn, has to offer. There's plenty more to do in the area and a
host of other outdoor activities including walking, riding, cycling and
that great Scottish game - golf.
Oban
The beautiful and bustling town of Oban under 3 miles from Cologin deserves
its reputation as the 'Gateway to the Isles'. It boasts Caledonian MacBrayne's
west coast ferry port serving Mull, Iona, Colonsay, Islay and many islands
in between. Its scenery is quite stunning.
As the largest town in the area, Oban has three excellent supermarkets,
a cinema, sports centre with swimming pool, sailing club, bowling club,
tennis courts, golf course, charming shops, its own distillery, a sandy
beach and a great variety of pubs and restaurants.
Isle of Mull
One of the most popular day trips from Oban is the ferry to the Isle of
Mull. If you've got young children a visit to 'Balamory' is a must! Whilst
Tobermory hardly needed a toddler tourism boom, the town has now accepted
its starring role in the TV series. If you do go wear flat heels as all
the Balamory houses are on the hill above Tobermory bay!
Isle of Iona
This tiny island off Mull's southern tip is a perfect spot to find yourself.
The Abbey's spiritual atmosphere complements the idyllic scenery. Take
a Three Isle Excursion and combine Mull, Iona and Staffa for a trip that
will stay with your forever.
Fort William
About an hours drive up the coast from Oban is the Highland town of Fort
William the self-styled 'outdoor capital of Scotland'. With Britain's
highest mountain - Ben Nevis - and the munros of Glencoe
there are certainly plenty of great walking, climbing, mountain biking
and skiing opportunities.
Inveraray
The former 'capital' of Argyll, the delightful town of Inveraray lies
just under 40 miles south of Oban on the shores of Loch Fyne. The current
town was planned and built between 1753 and 1776 replacing the old town
which was demolished to make room for the rebuilding of Inveraray
Castle. The castle is open to visitors and is well worth a visit
as is Inveraray Jail - a great place to take the family.
DIRECTIONS
Cologin is less than 3 miles from Oban but to get the most out of your
stay in Argyll we recommend that you have access to a car during your
visit.
By Car:
To reach Oban from the south there are two main routes - both of which
pass through beautiful scenery. Choose between the A82 and Loch Lomond
or the A83 and Loch Fyne and join the A85 which brings you into Oban from
the north!
By Train:
From Glasgow (Queen Street station) the train follows the scenic West
Highland Line from Crianlarich direct to Oban station.
By Plane:
Private flights can land at Oban Airport, 5 miles north of Oban at North
Connel. A seaplane also has daily flights from Glasgow to Oban Bay.
By Boat:
Access Lerags Glen by sea via Loch Feochan. Landing slip and pontoons
at Ardoran Marine, 2 miles from Cologin.
You can hire cars from Flit Self Drive in Oban.
Once in Oban, take the A816 towards Lochgilphead and turn RIGHT to LERAGS
just past Oban Livestock Market. Follow the single track road into Lerags
Glen for about ½ mile and turn RIGHT.
