Oban Top 10
Oban is the unofficial capital of the Scotland's West Highlands - the "Gateway to the Isles". Its panoramic views of mountains, lochs and islands make it unmissable for any visitor to Scotland. It is the starting point for visits to the nearby islands of Kerrera and Lismore, and further afield to the rest of the Hebrides.

Oban has captivated artists, authors, composers and poets for centuries: Queen Victoria thought it "one of the finest spots we have seen". If you are spending a couple of days in Oban here’s our Top 10 list of things you must see and do:

Guided day tours: no ordinary day out!
Take an Oban Backpacker Tours day tour and discover Argyll's hidden gems. Pose with shaggy Highland cows, get up close and personal with ancient standing stones, jump for joy at the whacky Bridge over the Atlantic.

Visit McCaig's Tower
An energetic climb up the hill behind the hostel takes you to McCaig's imposing granite folly. You'll be rewarded with fantastic panoramic views over Oban bay and beyond.

Eat al fresco!
For a superb al fresco eating experience, go across the bay to Oban Marina on the island of Kerrera. There you will find the Waypoint Bar and Grill with its covered seating area, fantastic views and a menu full of local seafood and meats. Waypoint customers can catch the free marina ferry from Oban's North Pier - they'll even bring you back once you've dined.

Island hopping
Take the wee ferry over to Kerrera – the island opposite Oban. Walk around the island, look out to sea from the ruined Gylen castle and munch homemade cakes at the island’s Tea Garden. A fun day out full of fresh air and stunning views!

Tick off some castles
Oban’s Dunollie castle stands guard over the entrance to Oban bay and nearby Dunstaffnage Castle is where Flora MacDonald was held captive in 1746. Soak up the history, breath in the sea air. Oh and take a few photos.

Sea kayaking
Enjoy a memorable day out with Oban Sea Kayak Guides. Explore the coastline by kayak with your enthusiastic guide, Colin, and look out for sea birds and seals. Definitely one to write home about!

A pint and a dram
Visit Oban’s own whisky distillery by day and tour Oban’s pubs by night. There’s Markie Dans – a lively bar with frequent live music gigs. Then there’s Aulay's Bar, The Lorne, Coasters and Paparazzi's with its cocktails and tapas. Each has it’s own mix of pub food, live music and good craic.

Thrilling boat trips
Clear the head with a blast across the water on a sea boat trip. Seafari from Easdale take you to the awesome Corryvrechan – the world’s third largest whirlpool.

Skipinnish Sea Tours and Mara Mhor leave from Oban and take you to see local wildlife.

Ceilidh dancing
Head for Skippinish Ceilidh House for regular dances and traditional music gigs. It’s lots of fun – you'll soon pick up the dance steps - or invent your own!

Just chill out!
Relax in Oban Backpackers lounge and enjoy good company, meet fellow travellers, help yourself to tea and coffee, sit by the fire or take on the hostel's famous pool challenge!
