Fishing
Loch Scammadale is 2 and a half miles long and offers fishing for Brown Trout all summer, with Sea Trout and Salmon rising in the Autumn. Our accommodation includes fishing on the entire northern shore of the loch with an additional mile and a half of the river Euchar

Luing Cattle
Scammadale Farm herd consists of 120 pure bred Luing cows which are crossed with a simmental bull to produce Sim-Luing calves and also 20 Simmental cross Luing (Sim-Luing) cattle. Calving takes place mainly in the spring of the year, with the calves sold in October - November at Oban Livestock Centre.

Male calves are sold to be fattened in sheds or of grass on arable or low ground farms, while the female calves go for breeding. Sim-Luing cows retaining the hardiness and milking abilities of the Luing, and with the confirmation of the Simmental, make excellent cows for crossing with Charlois or Limousin bulls.

The cattle are also grazed at nearby Ardencaple farm on the Isle of Seil.

Blackface Sheep
The hills rising to 1200 feet are steep and rocky, and are home to 600 blackface ewes. Those are bred pure. Lambs are sold in September - October at Oban Livestock Centre, except for females kept for future stock both at Scammadale and nearby Ardencaple farm where 350 ewes are crossed with terminal sires.

Things To Do
On your doorstep, the glen offers beautiful scenery for hill walking, mountain biking, or just a casual walk with stunning views and wildlife to be seen along the way. Fishing on the loch is included for residents, and for the more adventurous is ideal for canoeing or other water sports (no equipment is provided).

Oban is the "Gateway to the Isles", the starting point for countless ferries heading to the Inner and Outer Hebrides. These include islands accessible for day trips such as Mull, with its miniature railway and Tobermory (A.K.A. Balamory to the younger generation), Iona, settlement of St Columba including the famous Abbey, Staffa, renowned for its caves.

Further south, Jura & Islay in particular make excellent excursions, Islay having eight whisky distilleries!

Oban itself offers plenty to keep everyone amused. Between the Sealife Centre, McCaig's Folly (The Coliseum) overlooking the town, Seafari adventure boat trips taking in historic sites, wildlife, and if you time it right the Corryvreckan whirlpool between Scarba & Jura.

Oban also has a distillery, one of the smallest in Scotland, and tours offer a brilliant insight into the world of whisky production, finished with a "wee dram" of the Oban malt to see you on your way. Ben Cruachan, "The Hollow Mountain" - A hydro-electric power station built deep into the center of one of Scotland Munroes (A hill over 914m/3000feet).

Power station tours inside the mountain, a fantastic walk with brilliant scenery up to the dam, and a challenging climb to either or both of the mountains peaks overlooking Loch Awe. Kilmartin Glen - Ancient & pre-historic stone monuments, castles and standing stones.
