About Braemore Square Country House
Braemore Square Country House was built in 1840 and was once part of the Braemore Estate of the renowned Engineer, Sir John Fowler Bart. who built the Forth Rail Bridge, the Pimlico Bridge, which carried the first railway across the Thames (1860), Victoria Station and was a pioneer of the London Underground system.

Examples of Sir John's creativity can be found on the land and nearby, such as the suspension bridge over Corrieshalloch Gorge and the Falls of Measach, a mile south from us - not for the faint hearted...The building itself has a lot of history and ghosts!, having had various guises as part of the estate.

Activities
We still have acres of land and forest around us, and riverside access that we overlook. Fishing can be organized on our stretch of the river or in the Lochs around us - the River has a good stock of Salmon and Sea Trout (the salmon are returned on capture) during the season between February and October, and non-residents can fish too, though we charge a nominal daily fee.

Our location makes us an ideal base for a Highland holiday, the areas has endless walks, climbs, cycle routes and more - at levels that will match the active and the more sedate.

The current owners, Eddie and Wendy, are developing Braemore Square Country House into a self sufficient, organic smallholding. Currently we have hens providing free range eggs, and some amazing Kune Kune pigs (who have been trained to sit and stand on command!). We hope to add Sheep and Highland Cattle in the near future.

In 2006 we joined the Green Tourism Scheme and received a silver award for our efforts to minimize our environmental impact.

We are also well placed for anyone wishing to take a break on route from Inverness to Ullapool, Gairloch or any of the numerous villages and attractions of the Western Highlands.

Our aim is to make your visit to Scotland one that you will cherish, the accommodation has a quality Scottish ambiance that will make you want to come back time and time again.

We can offer you Bed and Breakfast in the main house, or a choice of three Self-Catering apartments. Either option is geared to provide you with a fantastic base to take advantage of the activities and outstanding scenery that the area affords. We open all year.

Archaeology News
Recent finds have caused some interest on our land.We believe we have found significant remains of a broch (an iron age drystone structure only found in Scotland), indicators of a number of roundhouses (believed to be 5000+ years old) and a possible burial mound.

Previous finds around Braemore and down the valley to Inverbroom have included 3 steatite bowls near Braemore Junction which were indicators of Viking activity - Ullapool itself derives its name from Norse Ulla-Bolstadr meaning Ulla's steading.

A Late Bronze Age bronze sword found at Inverbroom and a decorative bronze pin found near Dun an Ruigh Ruadh (now on display in the Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh) also indicate trade and activity in the area. Our position puts us on the route that would have undoubtedly been used by any land travellers and the interest in the new sites has been great.
