ATTRACTIONS / ACTIVITIES
One of the most unique and popular tourist destinations for overseas
and domestic tourists alike, Knysna is a precious unspoilt paradise.
It is characterised by a vast lagoon entering the Indian Ocean between
massive sandstone cliffs, 65,000 hectares of evergreen forest and unique
Cape fynbos.
The name Knysna is a Khoi word and its most probable meaning is 'straight
down' - an obvious reference to the Heads.
The Knysna Heads must be one of the most striking geological features
along the entire southern African coastline. They flank a deep but potentially
treacherous channel through which the sea pours in to flood the wide and
breathtakingly pretty lagoon at the mouth of the Knysna River.
Whatever the season, Knysna stays green. Its warm, temperate climate
makes it the perfect all-year-round destination.
This beautiful scenery is complimented by proud friendly locals, as well
as superb shopping - whether you're looking for hippy chic or top international
designs.
Knysna is also full of restaurants serving everything from famous Knysna
oysters to South African cuisine, sushi and fusion.
Sidewalk coffee shops allow you to watch the bustling while enjoying
your favourite refreshments, while several outdoor markets in and around
the town provide an ideal opportunity to spend time with the locals. There
are also numerous art galleries to visit, and one can even visit the Millwood
House Museum, which houses material relating to the history of the town.
Knysna boasts some of the most premier golf courses in the world, including
Pezula Championship Course and Simola Golf Estate.
Knysna Golf Course is also situated just on the outskirts of the town.
George, Heralds Bay and Plett also provide numerous opportunities to bring
out the clubs.
Knysna has many attractions in the surrounding area as well, one of the
most spectacular being the Knysna Forest.
It is the largest indigenous forest in South Africa comprising of tall
and ancient trees of local and exotic species. Knysna and it's surrounding
areas boast forest walks and beach walks aplenty and it's a wonderful
way to spend healthy time with family.
Knysna is well known for being an excellent mountain biking destination
and there are many trails and tour operators that can assist in finding
you the right one.
There are many beaches and swimming spots in Knysna, including Leisure
Isle in the lagoon itself or, a little further afield, Buffalo Bay and
Brenton.
For those wanting a nice leisurely drive Sedgefield, Wilderness and Plett
have their own beautiful beaches to conquer.
On the lagoon itself there are numerous opportunities to spend time in
the water, whether it be swimming, kite surfing or skiing.
There are also many opportunities to spend time on top of the water, on
either a paddle cruiser, a pleasure cruiser, a ferry or even a catamaran.
These will take you on a cruise up to, and, sometimes even through, the
Knysna Heads.
If it's wildlife you're after there are many places to visit in the area
Monkeys
Monkeyland lies about 50km east of Knysna and is a free-roaming sanctuary
with species ranging from Gibbons, Lemurs and Brown Howlers to smaller
specimens like the intelligent Capuchin.
Experience these monkeys as you would in the wild while walking on winding
wooden walkways under a dense forest canopy.
Elephants
The elephant park offers a rare and exciting opportunity to get close
to these free range gentle giants. Go on elephant walks, scheduled tours,
take an elephant-back safari or stay overnight.
Try the Elephant Sanctuary where 6 resident elephants live in a natural
indigenous forest setting. The Elephant Sanctuary offers guided walks,
elephant rides and a brush-down programme.
These are just a few of the hundreds of activities available Knysna and
its surrounding areas. The Knysna Tourism Board offers an amazing resource
on everything that is available to do or see.
