Location
Camp Figtree is situated 75 kilometers (or an hour's drive) from Port
Elizabeth, within South Africa's Eastern Cape Province.
Daily scheduled flights are operated from Johannesburg, Cape Town and
Durban to Port Elizabeth. For tailor made flights contact African Ramble
for a quote.
The original elephant section of the park was proclaimed
in 1931, when only eleven elephants remained in the area.
Today this finely tuned ecosystem is sanctuary to over 420 elephants,
450 Cape buffalo, black rhino, a variety of antelope species, as well
as the unique flightless dung beetle, found almost exclusively in Addo.
For the first time in over 100 years, lion and spotted hyena were reintroduced
to the park last year. But the Addo story has only just begun. Plans to
expand the 148 000 hectare Addo National Elephant Park into a 360 000
hectare "Greater Addo" park are moving forward at an exciting
pace. This expansion is transforming Addo into the ultimate tourism destination.
More than just Elephants
Once the process of expansion is completed, the park will span
an area of over 200km long, from the Algoa Bay, to the Zuurberg Mountain
range, and beyond to the Karoo.
With over 270 000 ha of terrestrial park, and 120 000 ha of marine zone,
it will be possible to see both elephants and whales in the same park,
in one day.
This will make the park the fourth largest in South Africa, and the first
to protect the Big 7 (elephant, buffalo, rhino, leopard, Southern right
whale and great white shark).
