Experiencing Africa is easy in Addo. You can ride or walk with elephants
at Addo Elephant Back Safaris – have close encounters with members
of the BIG 5 in the Addo Elephant National Park – visit some of
the Eastern Cape’s wonderful private game reserves or even experience
canoe trips or ferry rides on the beautiful Sundays River – and
this is but the tip of the iceberg!
Various safaris and other excursions can be arranged to suit most budgets
– from the magnificent Addo Elephant to the humble Dung Beatle the
Greater Addo Area abounds with nature’s splendour.
Horse riding, hiking trails and 4X4 routes are situated in close proximity
and expert guides can be arranged to personalize your excursions. Your
schedule can be as relaxed or as active as you want it to be!
Spend a relaxing day sunbathing by the swimming pool or take a leisurely
stroll through the citrus orchards on the farm.
Wander around in our garden where surprises lurk behind every corner.
Various species of bird make their home here and fascinating hours can
be spent watching their behavior. The rose garden boasts more than 50
rose varieties, continuously providing an array of colour from spring
to autumn.

our frequent classical music soirees Hopefield Country House offers an

Hopefield Country House Accommodation
Slightly elevated above the green orchards of the citrus farm, Hopefield
Country House offers unobtrusive views of the natural beauty of the Sundays
River Valley.
The homestead offers spacious areas in which to relax whilst listening
to the sounds of everyday country living or the relaxing sounds of classical
music.
You might even want to borrow a must-read novel from the library to enjoy
during your stay. Wi-Fi internet access is available through-out and Satellite
TV is offered in the common area.
Six individually decorated, en suite bedrooms will envelope you in luxury.
Crisp percale linen on our king, queen or twin single beds will ensure
a peaceful nights sleep.
Bedrooms are spacious and equipped with air-conditioning, CD player and
radio, coffee and tea facilities as well as all bathroom amenities to
ensure your stay is comfortable and care-free.
A limited laundry service is also offered. Rooms have private entrances
that lead onto spacious verandas with wonderful views of our gardens and
swimming pool.
Dining
Breakfast at Hopefield is a hearty affair. A buffet choice of
fresh seasonal fruit, cold meats, cheeses, muesli & cereals together
with freshly baked pastries and breads complement our traditional cooked
breakfast. In season freshly squeezed orange juice from our orchards will
crisply start your day. Add a steaming cup of filter coffee or tea and
you are ready for your adventures in Addo.
After an active day, nothing beats sitting down to a leisurely dinner
with stimulating conversation, great food and lovely South African wine,
reflecting on the excitement of the day.
At Hopefield we take care to use fresh local ingredients to create a dining
experience that leaves you satisfied and relaxed. Being a reflection of
rural hospitality our approach to food is unpretentious and passionate.
Our three course set menu changes daily and we can cater for most dietary
preferences and / or food allergies if we have some advance notice.
Hopefield Country House has a fully licensed bar with a variety of cold
drinks, alcoholic beverages and estate wines.

The Addo Elephant National Park offers the best elephant
viewing in the world and with a little luck most visitors to the park
will be entertained by family groups of elephant engaging in mud fights
and other playful activities.
The park is home to the Big 5 and with the addition of the Marine section
in Algoa Bay the Big 7 (great white shark and southern right whale). Most
visitors to the Addo Elephant National Park prefer to leisurely drive
through the park by themselves, however a number of guided tours are on
offer.
Game Drives
Superb morning, afternoon, sunset and night drives of 2 hours each in
open vehicles are on offer. Summer Safaris at 06:00, 09:00, 12:00, 15:00,
18:00, 20:00. From Autumn to Spring these times vary with the change in
daylight. No children under the age of 6 years are allowed on game drives
Horse Trails
Morning and afternoon horseback-safaris accompanied by a ranger
can be booked. While riding through the reserve one often has the opportunity
of viewing game up close. Beginner Ride – 08:00 / Advance Ride –
14:00. No children under the age of 10 are allowed.
Private Game Reserves
There are numerous Private Game Reserves in close proximity to Hopefield
Country House. Many of these Reserves offer day trips giving a fascinating
glimpse into the habits and behavior. of various species of game. Availability
is limited and booking in advance is essential.
Schotia Safaris (+/- 45 minutes from Hopefield)
Schotia Safaris is a privately owned and managed reserve, which has been
owned by the Bean family since 1833.
Schotia is the oldest, private game viewing reserve in the Eastern Cape
province of South Africa, and also the first reserve to have Lions that
can hunt for themselves.
There are approximately 2000 animals and over 40 species in the reserve.
The wildlife introduction process started in 1982 and will continue until
the reserve is fully stocked with a variety of animals which are suited
to the habitat. The main objective at Schotia is to present a product
to their guests which give them an idea of what Africa used to look like
before man arrived.
They believe that “man must fit in with nature and that animals
should be self-sustaining.” It is believed that “canned hunting”
is equally as bad as “canned photography or viewing.” There
are numerous antelope as well as Lion, Hippo, Rhino, Giraffe, Ostrich,
Monkeys, Aardwolf, Aardvark, and Wildebeest.
Schotia Tooth and Claw Safari
The Tooth & Claw is a guided drive in open topped vehicles. This afternoon
/ evening experience can be one of the highlights of your visit to Addo.
Late afternoon and early evening is often the most rewarding time of day
for game viewing as this is when animals are at their most active.
This is especially the case with lion, which are generally nocturnal hunters.
Schotia is also home to white rhino, zebra, wildebeest, warthog, jackal
and crocodile. The drive is followed by a traditional meal served under
the stars in a thatched open air lapa. Time: 15:00 – 21:00
Addo Elephant National Park / Schotia Safaris Full day Safari
Complimentary pickup from Hopefield Country House is followed by a guided
tour through the Addo Elephant National Park.
After lunch guests are transferred to Schotia Safaris where they join
the Tooth and Claw Safari. At the conclusion of the evening guests are
transported back to Hopefield Country House.
Amakhala Game Reserve (+/- 1 hour drive from Hopefield)
Amakhala means “Aloe’, the prolific indigenous plant found
in this diverse area of the Eastern Cape. Feel the heartbeat and rhythm
of Africa as you become part of a Big 5 Safari Adventure on Amakhala Game
Reserve.
Guided by experienced rangers on open Land Rovers Amakhala offers a product
aimed at providing visitors with an experience of the diverse wildlife
and landscape including: The Big 5, Black Wildebeest, Cheetah, Giraffe,
Zebra and numerous other antelope.
The excursion commences from Reed Valley with a welcome drink and a game
drive through the reserve enjoying spectacular views before descending
into the Bushman’s River Valley.
After lunch is served guests depart on a tranquil 45-minute river cruise.
The river cruise is followed by a game drive through other parts of the
reserve making your way back to Reed Valley. Times: 12:00 – 18:00
Pumba Private Game Reserve (+/- 1 ¼ hour drive
from Hopefield)
Pumba Day Safaris offer sightings of the Big 5, against a backdrop of
thornveld, grassland, thicket and forest vegetation.
Apart from white lion, giraffe, leopard and 22 species of antelope, Pumba
is a bird lovers’ paradise with more than 200 bird species making
their home here. Time: 16:00 – 18:00 (includes dinner)
Kwantu Private Game Reserve (+/- 1 ¼ hour drive
from Hopefield)
Kwantu means ‘place of gathering’, and the sights, sounds,
scents and sensations of this green pocket of Africa will embrace you.
Visit the oldest Anglican Church in South Africa, before departing on
a three hour game drive to encounter rhino, elephant, buffalo, hippopotamus,
lion, leopard, zebra and various antelope. Then visit the Predator Educational
and Rehabilitation Centre, ending off with a 3-course meal. Time: 14:00
