THINGS TO DO IN CAPE TOWN
Cape Town is rightly famed for its wine and food. In addition, there are
many things to do in Cape Town: numerous pristine beaches, hiking on the
unique Table Mountain reserve, whale watching in Hermanus and a thousand
ways to have fun.
Apart from Cape Town's scenic beauty, nature enthusiasts will appreciate
the local flora. The Western Cape's fynbos is unique to the region and
contains the largest number of different flower types of any plant type
in the world.
Cape Town boasts a cosmopolitan nightlife showcasing the wide range of
cultures from which Cape Town has been forged. Some of the most popular
Cape Town tourist attractions are listed below.
Table Mountain
Table Mountain offers a beautiful backdrop to the city, as well as spectacular
views from its summit. The mountain’s presence is always felt, but
it changes colour throughout the day and in different weather conditions.
Taking the cable car or walking to the top is essential. Lion’s
Head also offers breathtaking 360-degree views and is a less strenuous
hike.
V&A Waterfront
Visit the Victoria & Alfred Mall for great curio shopping and fine
dining in a teeming maritime environment.
Robben Island
Visit the former prison island of Robben Island, now a living museum and
conservation area. Former prisoners consist mainly of the ANC’s
top leaders, including Nelson Mandela.
Cape Winelands
The wine-producing region around Stellenbosch, is not only one of the
important wine-growing regions in South Africa, but it is also the oldest
and most beautiful.
Cape Point
Visit the tip of Africa. Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve has numerous
walks and a number of beaches, there’s 40km of coast within the
reserve, a great cross section of the Cape’s unique flora as well
as fauna – beware of the baboons.
Cape Town Beaches
Cape Town beaches are some of the most beautiful and unspoilt in the world,
unusual for a city of its size. Some of the best beaches on the Atlantic
Seaboard include Clifton first through to fourth, Camps Bay and Llandudno.
On the False Bay side enjoy slightly less dramatic scenery but warmer
water. The best beaches for swimming on this side of the Peninsula are
Muizenberg, Kalk Bay, Fish Hoek and Simonstown.
Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens
These are among the most beautiful gardens in the world. They are situated
on the eastern side of Table Mountain, right at the foot of the final
steep escarpment overlooking False Bay and the Cape Flats.
These indigenous gardens delight botanists and nature lovers from around
the world, perfect for a lazy family stroll.
Boulders Beach
Within walking distance of Simonstown, Boulders Beach has a number of
attractive coves that offer shelter and shade and a wonderful safe swimming
area ideal for families. Boulders Beach is also renowned for its growing
colony of jackass penguin.
